I'm going in for my c-section in 11 days because I have insulin managed GD and she's still breech. I've read a million and one hospital bag lists but I'd like to pack lightly so if you could help me out by letting me know what you actually ended up using that would be much appreciated. Any advice about c-sections as well would be nice. Thanks ladies!
Re: C-section mommies
I had a c/s due to a breech baby. Just be careful, TAKE YOUR MEDS (even if you don't think you need them, they will help) and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Honestly, the only thing I used out of my hospital bag was my maternity underwear and jammies (and toiletries, of course). I didn't read any books, watch any movies, and only wore one pair of the jammies I brought. I only wore the mesh undies for the first day.
You will want comfy clothes that are loose to wear because after a day or two you will want out of those gowns! Plus with people visiting you will want something comfy to wear that doesnt show everything
Ditto the tv thing we NEVER even found the remote for the one in our room and never watched anything the baby was in our room and we didnt have a chance.
Pack something loose to wear home from the hospital and like PP said, ask for help, take your meds, and try and shower the day after you c section you will feel a lot better! My husband had to wash me while I stood there but it was so refreshing!
Agreed. Take your meds on time to ease the pain. Once you're off schedule it hurts like a beeotch and it's tough getting it to go away.
Comfy clothes = a must also. I was able to wear my normal bikini panties as they did not hit the incision thankfully.
C/S, especially planned are great and not as tough as most people seem to think (everyone is different obviously) but I was up and walking the next AM after they removed the cath. I could have went home that day if I wanted (and, YES, I wanted too) but DD was in the NICU so we stayed to be with her, otherwise I'd left on day 2. Home is much better IMO.
I used my chap stick, toiletries, yoga pants, tops, and pump. LO was jaundice and they wanted to supplement with formula so I pumped so that they could see he was getting enough milk.
I agree with pp take your meds when you are supposed to. Make sure to walk, this helped me a lot but don't over do it. I also used the mesh panties while in the hospital.
Hospital bag items: hotel size shampoo/conditioner/body wash; hairbrush; toothbrush and toothpaste; razor; my own towel (hospital ones are small and rough); one or two comfy set(s) of pajamas (wore on night 2 and 3 in hospital) so I could walk around the hospital with baby and be comfortable; going home outfit for LO and a blanket for LO (blanket and outfit also came in handy for hospital pictures that came out amazing!); going home outfit for you; a book to read (but my c-section was emergency so I labored for awhile); cell phone and any important phone numbers to call people; laptop.
Advice - Take your meds and don't come off of them even if you are feeling better, if you do you will be in agony!, (I was religious about taking them the first week and have just now only take when necessary (9 days PP); drink lots of water to help with swelling; walk around hospital (helps with swelling); have your significant other stay with you at least the first night when you can't manage anything on your own (we have another toddler at home); when you get home limit using the stairs; rest rest rest when you can.
Good luck!
I had an unscheduled c-section but went in with an induction. The only things I used for myself were my brush, hairdryer, toothbrush/paste, shampoo, deodorant and make-up. We also used our laptop, cell phone, camera, etc..., but those are the only 'personal' items I used.
I wore my maternity yoga pants and a maternity t-shirt home. I wore the hospital gowns the entire time I was there; it was easiest for me with all the incision checks, lactation consults, etc.. that they were doing. It also made skin-to-skin time with DS very easy. I wore the mesh panties the whole time I was there and the first few days I was home.
This! The mesh undies were fabulous!!!!
I had an emergency c section. Here is my biggest advice: PACK PANTS WITH HIGH WAISTS! The insicion is right below where the top of most pants hit, so all of my normal pants were very uncomfortable. I would bring some very loose sweatpants or pajama pants. Don't bring any pants where the waist will hit anywhere below your belly button. I also wished I had brought a razor to shave. I felt gross not being able to shave for 4 days.
Ditto - I got 3 or 4 pairs and wore them for 2 weeks at home (I washed them!). I didn't have a planned C/S, so I recovered from both labor and surgery, essentially.... ditto to PP, I wore the hospital nursing gown the entire stay though was glad I had a robe to wear over it. I wore my flip flops, and showered the day after DS was born, so used my toiletries. I wore the sweats/tank/sweatshirt/uggs home that I wore in to the hospital. The rest of my suitcase was untouched aside from LO's going home outfit.
