Babies: 0 - 3 Months

The nipple shield worked!

DD stopped latching when we got home from the hospital, so I started pumping and feeding her out of a bottle. I went up to BRU today and bought a nipple shield after several people suggested it. She latched instantly! I wonder what it is about the nipple shield that they like better? Either way I don't care because all that matters is that she's eating!

Re: The nipple shield worked!

  • Babies are very sensitive to tastes and textures. She most likely wants a silicone nipple. I couldn't ever wean my older two girls off the shield but I didn't get help with it either. Hopefully pretty soon you can have an LC help you wean off of it so baby can continue nursing if that's what you want!

  • I wasn't able to wean DS off the shield and he's 5 months already.  But, I don't care at all.  As long as he's nursing and getting MY MILK, that's perfectly fine with me.  Every time I try to give him my nipple without the shield, he makes yucky faces.  He's used to the silicone already.

It is meant to be used temporarily or you could damage your nipples. Not saying that to step on toes but so that you know that. I used the shield for three months with my second daughter before I had to stop.

Thats true. Thats what my LC told me.  It was hell weaning him off but I got him to latch and its so much better without it.

  • We had to use a shield about 4-5 hours after DD was born because she was unable to latch on me directly and hadn't nursed at all yet.. she was able to latch onto the shield and has been using it ever since.

The LC we consulted when she was a couple days old noticed that she was unable to pull enough of my nipple into her mouth so it was not hitting the roof of her mouth in the right spot to get her suck-reflex going. The nipple shield hit that spot right away signaling her to suck.

I have tried nursing her without the shield several times, and only twice have we been successful. The rest of our attempts resulted in her trying to latch and getting very frustrated, so I would just put the shield back on.

I have had no issues with my nipples or plugged ducts or anything.. my supply has been great, and DD has thrived.

The only complaint I have is that there is no graceful way to NIP since I have to undo the clasp on my shirt, put the shield on (which is hard to do covered up!) and then latch her.. that's the only thing thats been a bother to me.

Anywho - just chiming in with my nipple shield success story! :)

I've had pretty much the same story. I have inverted nipples and wasa told I wouldn't be able to bf, so I am super excited that I can at all. (Just so you know, I tried the nipple suction thing and it didn't work) Yay for success!
