Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question about clothes from 3rd trimester

With about 8 weeks to go till our c-section, and showers over, I was doing an inventory of the clothes we have for LO.   We have tons of 0-3 month and 3 month stuff, but almost no newborn stuff (only 2 sleepers).

Should I go buy a few more sleepers/outfits in newborn size?   What size did your LO's wear early on?

Right now our little guy is 3 - 3.5lbs...he has been tracking around 50% on the growth chart since the 20w scan, so our doctor seems to think he will not be a giant guy...maybe around 7 lbs.   Just a guess though!  No one can predict these things of course.  :)

Re: Question about clothes from 3rd trimester

  • I would buy maybe another 3 or 4 NB sleepers.  Get a couple different brands too.  Carters run big; Gerber runs small; and Target brand is about "normal" if that makes sense.

We just dressed LO in sleepers for the first two weeks then once his cord fell off and he could take a real bath, we busted out the cute clothes. :-)

  • Our little guy was 7lb 15 when born and 7 lb 7 oz when we left the hospital after the 4 day stay. He was in newborn for about 3 weeks. He is just over two months now and in almost all 3 month and 3-6 month stuff. So for us the 0-3 went super fast. Maybe grab a couple sleepers or the gowns but I wouldn't go overboard you will fit in the 0-3 quickly most likely.
  • my DS was 6lbs 11oz and wore NB size for almost 4 weeks.  So I would recommend getting a few sleepers in NB size.

  • I am so happy I went out and bought like 6 newborn footie pjs for the day time and I have sleep gowns in 0-3 that she wears at night. I would say get yourself some footie pjs. I dont want to worry about having to do laundry all the time because LO doesnt have enough stuff.
  • DD was 6lbs 11oz when born.  She is 3 weeks 3 days right now and probably around 7 1/2 lbs right now. (last weigh in was a week ago and she was 7lbs 3 oz).  She still fits perfectly in NB size.  Some of the 0-3 month footies fit her, but are a little big.  And then some of the 0-3 month ones are way too big.  I've noticed that some brands run smaller than others.  For example, the Carter's brand is more on the smaller side for NB sizes...and DD still fits in to them.  DD was at the 50% percentile at the 20 week appt but she was never measured after that as I didn't have another ultrasound after that.  She is probably more in the 30% percentile now...I think that's what she was at her first pedi appt.  It's just so hard to judge.  Once your LO is here, if need be, just send DH out to pick up some more of a size if you need it so you aren't having to do laundry every day.  Hope this helps!  It's just a guessing game really.

I think you mean the Carter "Just One Year"  line from Target. Regular Carter (that you get at Macy's etc) itself is actually pretty big in NB, except maybe compared to Baby Gap or something.

Anyway, first DS was in NB for at least 4 weeks. You just never know. I would get some sleepers and don't take the tags off/wash everything. They are so tiny they'd all fit in one load of laundry.

  • Thanks ladies!  HUGE help!   I think I will pick up a few NB sleepers when I am out shopping tomorrow. :)
  • DD was 7 lbs 13 oz at birth and wore newborn clothes and diapers for a month.  She basically lived in sleepers for that time.  I did have a few outfits for when we went places or had visitors.  I would definately get some newborn stuff.  Keep the tags on and if you don't need them take them back or re gift.  You won't want to be running to the store to buy baby clothes right away.
