Thrush?

I'm not sure what thrush looks/acts like....every night this past week, LO has nursed frantically and basically attacks my boob. She will pull off and relatch about 20 times each session all the while scratching and kicking me. She only acts this way at night so it makes me think she is not getting enough milk. I can squeeze my nipple and milk squirts out every time. I read on kellymom.com that this behavior could be all sorts of things, thrush being one. I noticed white stuff on her tongue but it is only there right after she eats. My nipples don't hurt and aren't cracked or bleeding. She nurses calmly all day long.....what do babies with thrush act like?

Re: Thrush?

  • If she had thrush it would be all over in her mouth, tough, cheeks, and gums.  You also would probably get it on your nipple also and it will hurt her mouth and would probably fuss all the time.  My DS also fusses on the breast at night, I also am not sure way, if he is just getting tired or what.

  • Sorry it would be little white spots all over.
  • My LO has had thrush for a month--he's on meds for it--but he never acted any different.  We are FF not BF-ing though.

  • Sounds like what our little guy does when I'm over-engorged and he's getting too much milk all at once.  I think there's an article on kellymom about forceful letdown -- you might want to read that and see if it fits.

  • It could also be reflux.  DD has reflux and is on medication for it, but it still acts up when feeding.  At those times, she is thrashing around and being more noisy. She also makes weird faces.

i didn't know others go through this too.. my LO also does the same exact thing at night. I thought it was that i had him off the boob for a week (due to medical reasons) so he just got use to the bottle.. but it's strange how it's almost always only at night (with a few times during the day here and there)

Did you by any chance supplement with a bottle for a while?
