Keeping a 2 month old up...

If you keep your 2 month old up during the day more do they get better sleep at night, or does that just make them cranky?

On Thanksgiving DS was kept up because of all the noise, he was cranky but slept for 6 hours straight. I'm wanting to try it again, but scared he'll be fussy and not get anymore sleep than normal!

Re: Keeping a 2 month old up...

  • DD has just been more awake during the day on her own.  She usually only naps for about 45 minutes at a time during the day.  She has been STTN for about 4 weeks now.  She will be two months on Friday.

  • I find that every once in a while on a busy/hard day where Andrew gets less sleep he'll sleep longer at night.  But generally, he sleeps better when he's had good daytime sleep.  He sleeps about 8 hrs a night but the few nights where he's gone 9, 10, or even 11 hours have been on days when he's also had really good, restful naps during the day.

Besides, I hate to make him cranky during the day just for *my* convenience at night. From your OP, I think you feel the same way.

Oh FYI, Andrew is 3 months and 1 week.

  • DS will be 2 months in another week and I can't keep him up if he is tired.  He gets so fussy being up to long.  But he is staying awake longer and starting to sleep longer at night.  We go about 5-6 hours at night now then nurse and go back to sleep for 3-4 more hours.
  • He isn't STTN but as long as he doesn't sleep too late into the evening, DS does much better if he has had good naps.  Actually the nights he has slept the most were days that he slept the most! I think keeping him up would just get him overtired and make him grumpy. During the day I do try to avoid things that I know will make him fall asleep right after he eats such as the moby or his swing, but if he is just hanging out and falls asleep I just let him be.

  • you will make your LO overtired in the long run. If you were tired, would you want someone to force you to stay awake? He will sleep longer soon enough, don't try to force it! :-)

  • I would never keep DS awake intentionally because he gets so over-tired and cannot sleep.  Sleep begets sleep.  I usually follow a routine of 1. feed for (usually a half hour), 2. play while looking for signals of being tired (yawns, eye rubs)...this usually is about 30-45 minutes 3. Down to sleep awake but drowsy.
  • DD sleeps when she wants to sleep no matter where we are or what we're doing.  I have no plans on forcing her to stay awake in hopes that this may mean I get to sleep longer at night.  You may think you're doing your LO a service but it's really for your own benefit and that just isn't right.  DD has one big nap in the middle of the day and pockets of little ones throughout the day when she chooses to.  Eventually they will be awake longer during the day but that should come NATURALLY not because you force them to.
