FIL is pushing videos/TV on DD

Ugh! He just doesn't stop. He keeps buying DVD's for DD. She doesn't watch TV - but he doesn't get it.  We keep trying to tell him - but he just came home from Target with a dvd of Elmo's Potty Time.  It's just frustrating.

DH is going to have to have a talk with him....

  • my mom does the same thing. they have direct tv and they were doing a free preview of the kid's channels. she told me she was gonna record several shows for Hannah, and I told her that we don't let Hannah watch TV (it's on in the background from time to time, but she has never been placed in front of a tv with the purpose of watching a show, KWIM?). anyway, my mom got all sh*tty with me and was like "FINE, if you don't want it, then i won't do it!" ummm ok, thanks! That's what I was trying to tell you, lol!

  • Would it help to tell him that the AAP recommends no tv for children under two.? Then it's a medical thing and not just you and DH being "weird"? LOL :)

  • We don't let S watch TV, but I don't make a big deal about it with the ILs or my parents.  If they give us a dvd or something like that I just say thanks and put it away.
  • Well, see, last night at MIL's, he kept turning the TV on to find little kids programs & trying to sit them down to watch with him. It's like she *needs* to watch because that's what she does. We've told him that she doesn't watch tv and don't want her to - then he acts like we're depraving her.

Exactly. Just say thank you and put them in a box. What's the problem?

I'm a big believer in fostering strong relationships between DD and her grandparents. Even if what they want to do with her isn't exactly what I want her doing. If grandpa really wants to bond with baby by watching cartoons, I don't think one short session of tv will hurt her. If grandpa sees her every day and wants to watch tv with her, that's a separate issue. But once in a while, I'd probably decide to let DD watch tv -- even though I am very much against tv before 2.
