I myself don't have a preemie but my sister had my niece last week at 33 weeks 2 days. She weighed 5 lbs 1 oz and has been doing really well. She's breathing on her own and has gone the last 3 days without a breathing episode where she forgets to breath. Right now they are working on getting her to take her full feeding.
Yesterday the Dr came to my sister and her fiancee and said that they have to redo a blood and urine test on the baby b/c her protein levels came back abnormal and they also want to test my sister b/c it could of come from her. If the babies levels come back abnormal again they want to transfer her to childrens hospital b/c they said they are better equipped to deal with it, which worries me b/c why would they need to transfer her. They did say it showed as a mild case but we still are unsure of what it could cause
Does anyone know what any of this means? My sister doesn't really ask a lot of questions and now she's worried. I hang on thebump a lot on "Getting pregnant" and figured I'd check here to see if this is something common in preemies or if anyone knew anything about it.
Thanks
Re: abnormal protein levels?
sorry I am not sure what the implications are...I had high protein levels with had to do with kidney issues that resolved themselves once I delivered but LO never had that issue. Hoping for the best for your sister.
I hate when family members don't ask the important questions. My sister is the same way!
It's kinda hard to answer your question with the info provided, but if your niece would have low albumin (which is a type of protein that is very important) she would have a big problem with a lot of swelling.
It might be better for her to be transferred just so she is in the right hands for them to handle the problem. Do you guys have a children's hospital close by?
Good luck to you guys.
