Babies: 0 - 3 Months

question about cervadil

hello, i'm over here from the 3rd trimester board.

i'm looking at an induction starting sunday evening with cervadil if my baby doesn't come before then. i was just wondering if anyone had this and what your experience was like. i know what it is and how it's administered-my main question is does it cause any initial pain when inserted and can you get up and move around while it's in? my dr. almost had me skip the cervadil because my cervix is already pretty soft and i'm about 50% effaced but decided to go ahead and do it just in case and then start with the pitocin monday morning. any info is appreciated!

thanks ladies-can't wait to be on this side of pregnancy!

Re: question about cervadil

  • I had it, it doesn't hurt if you ask for it in gel form, I've heard some people get it in "disc" form and that hurts.

I had to lie flat for 1 hour for it to soak it I guess. It made me VERY crampy, and it only helped me dilate 2 more centimeters.

IF you have any ? about induction, I went through basically everything short of a C/S to get my little guy out

  • I was given cervidil during my induction. I had two rounds of it inserted for a total of 18 hours before the pitocin was started, but I did not feel any pain at all with it. I was able to get up, go to the bathroom an move around like normal.

  • I was given cervadil for my induction the night before DD was born.  We did two rounds of the gel every 4 hours, once at  2am, once at 6am, my doctor came in and broke my water at 10am and started pitocin.  I was induced two weeks early but this certainly made things get going.  Smooth, no cramps or anything, I know I did get up and go to the bathroom in the morning when I woke up but that's all I remember until after DD was born.  Good luck, it will be just fine!!
  • It kind of looked like a tampon.  You have a string hanging out from it.  I don't remember it being painful.  You are supposed to stay laying down for an hour or 2 after it goes in so it stays in.

I did have to have two 12 hour doses of it though when I was induced.  I went in on a Monday night and had DD on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.

     Good luck!

  • I had it put in the night before my induction and it didn't hurt. I started having constant contractions about an hour into it and the baby's heartbeat dropped drastically and they had to run in and pull it out. I started having contractions on my own after that. Everything was fine though and she was healthy.
  • I had cervadil for12 hours (1 insertion). It was uncomfortable going in but was painless until it was removed the next morning- very uncomfortable coming out, but it was quick. It looked like a tape worm.  Good luck w/ your induction if you end up going that route. I had a very positive induction experience and hope you do too.

  • The first time it was inserted I didn't feel anything at all, but the second and third time I felt a bit of pain during insertion but then nothing afterward.  They will make you lie down for an hour after insertion to ensure that the gel doesn't slip out of you, but after that you can get up and move around all you want.  Good luck with your induction.

  • I was given cervadyl for my 1st of three inductions.  It was a tiny square of paper with the medicine on it with a string attached.  It did not hurt, but it did make me crampy.  I also had to lie down for an hour once they put it in.  Unfortunately, I had some weird allergic reaction to it and it made me swell inside versus softening my cervix.
  • the first round started at 6pm, i was contracting by 3am.  my contractions got longer and stronger, but i made no progress by 6am.  they waited 2 hrs and put the second round in, that one was uncomfortable, but nothing compared to contractions.  i had my baby at 2:36pm that day :)

  • My cervidil was inserted at 8pm (no pain) and I had to lay down for 2 hours and be monitored (NST) to make sure the baby wasn't reacting badly. After that, I was able to move around, go to the bathroom, eat, etc. It's like a tampon inserted inside you but smaller.

I was 70% effaced prior and fingertip dialated.  I was told that the cervidil usually stays in for 12 hours and if it does it's job then we'd start pitocin.  I was told that I may need a second 12 hour dose if it doesn't work.  I was also told that some women go into full blown labor with just cervidil and do not need pitocin.

Around 2am I was in full blown labor. They removed the cervidil at 6am and actually contemplated giving me meds to slow my labor down because the contractions were coming so hard and strong.

    GL to you!!

  • I had Cervadil as well.  There was no pain when it was inserted.  I had to stay in bed for about 2 hours before getting up...I was attached to monitors though so walking around was a pain in the butt, I had to take the IV pole with me.

As for the rest of the story... within a few hours of inserting the Cervadil it had to be removed because it was causing very strong, unproductive contractions that were causing the baby's heart rate to drop.
