My OB called today to tell me my blood tests results were in & I have a heterozygous prothrombin gene mutation. This causes blood clots which occur more often with pregnancy. He told me to start taking baby aspirin every day & wants me to go to an infertility specialist to see if they recommend me taking an anticoagulant. I did not have infertility issues as I got pregnant the first month with my son & the baby I lost, but he wants them to review my blood work & give their recommendation as well. Does anyone else have this mutation & what has your experience been like with it? Thanks!
Re: finally got an answer!
Don't have any advice or suggestions, just wanted to say that I'm glad you at least have an answer and can come up with a game plan! GL!
Did your dr give you a specific name for it? I have Factor V Leiden, also heterozygous (that just means that only one of my parents had the gene), it is a disorder that causes me to clot easier and is especially true for women on birth control or when they are pregnant. I was diagnosed after my brother was hospitalized with severe blood clots and I was immediately switched to progesterone only BC and started on daily baby aspirin. I was also told when I got pregnant I would probably have to be on injectable blood thinners (Lovenox or Heparin). Well, I just became pregnant and they decided they did want me on Lovenox injections (I inject myself once a day). I am also still taking a baby aspirin everyday.
If you are wondering why I am on this board, it is b/c I started spotting the other day, and then it changed to more of a flow, so I am in limbo waiting for my beta hcg results to see if I am miscarrying or not!! I don't think this had anything to do with the Factor V, and I actually started the Lovenox after the spotting started.
The high-risk board has a lot of other ladies with Factor V and other clotting disorders who are also on Lovenox, just lurking over there you could probably find out a lot.
Good luck, my thoughts and prayers are with you!
diagnosed with heterozygous Factor V Leiden 2008; m/c 11/09 @ 5 1/2 wks; m/c 5/10 @ 4 1/2 wks; RLP testing done, diagnosed with antiphospholipid syn. and low progesterone; 7/10 started on Heparin injections & progesterone supps @ 3 dpo, BFP 8/9/10!!!
I have heterzygous prothrombin gene mutation G20210. Its important you know exactly which one..it will affect you in more than just pregnancy.
I had 2 normal healthy pregnancies..then had 2 miscarriages after my 2nd DS.
Even with a heterozygous G20210 I have to take heprin or some blood thinner as soon as I find out that I am pregnant.
This and some of the risks with it are why we are stopping at 2 kids. =(
