Appropriate?  Not appropriate?  Discriminatory?

Re: NBR: Discuss Adam Lambert performance

  • I do not think his performance was appropriate for prime time TV.  HOWEVER, I think it is unfair that it's ok for female performers to do similar things, and not get crap for it.  Personally, I think it's inappropriate for either sex, but if they're going to let the girls do it, then they should allow it from a man as well.

  • I could have done without the oral sex looking stuff.  That's just nasty and I would not want a child to see that.  I think they could have had a great performance without that in there.  I think the kiss is no big deal though.

I agree completely...they should have considered their audience in regards to his performance. At the same time you have to wonder what his motives were do it in the first place. The networks need to realize though that you can't treat one group differently. I know the girls that have done it weren't gay like Adam and it may have been viewed as a "joke", but by discriminating against him they had to know there would be a backlash.

  • I haven't heard much about it (I live in bubble some days haha!) but I just watched the video on youtube... interesting to say the least.  Let's say we were watching it and my tween child was watching with us, I probably would have changed the channel after about 30 seconds as it is not appropriate imo. I've seen Britney and Madonna have just as racey performances on tv.. maybe not on ABC at 9pm more like MTV though.

I think he knew what kind of backlash there would be and that is EXACTLY why he did it.  I saw an interview with him, and it's almost like he was daring them to discriminate against him.  As intentional as it seemed, I just had to agree with him.  But I'm not sure this was the appropriate venue to do it.

  • I just watched it on youtube.  Honestly, given all that I've heard about this performance, I didn't find it to be that big of a deal or nearly as riskay as I expected from the way people talk.  I've seen more sexually provocative actions on other awards shows than this performance.

  • I love Adam Lambert, but I didn't think it was appropriate. Although I blame the network more than him- they are the ones that let it go on tv. If it was his music video, that's one thing...but it was too much for ABC in my opinion.

However, I think the parents that are outraged are a little silly. I don't think he performed until really late...and really, you should know what your kids are watching and there's no way I'd let my kid watch Adam Lambert, he is one of those artists that likes to push the envelope a lot.

  • There were definitely other venues that he could have used. I know there is a lot of discrimination towards gay individuals, but was the right way of addressing it?
  • It's a little bit much for network TV, but it's not the most shocking thing ever.

I do think, that his singing sounded awful and it was a bad performance. (Not just because of the content.)

  • I didn't see it live but think I get the gist from some internet searching and slide shows... To me, it's inappropriate in the same way most performers are inappro these days. Maybe I'm a crotchety old lady, but I just don't like the weird sexuality and dominatrix get-ups. The simulated oral and giving the crowd the finger... pretty sure a straight woman would get sh!t for that, right? (I don't follow awards controversy very well, correct me if I'm wrong.)

I doubt I'd ever want my kids to watch the AMA's anyway!

  • Attention attention attention!  That's all he did it for.  Is he right?  Sure - it's hypocritical.  Sure - it can be seen as discriminatory against gay rights, etc.  But that's NOT why he did it.  He did it because now he'll be talked about on the news and in the tabloids and everytime it's brought up his price goes up.  He knew it, his managers knew it, etc.  Publicity.  That's all it was done for.  His whole "gay rights/unfair treatment" take on it is just an act to be MORE controversial to get MORE publicity.
  • I heard about this yesterday but when I tried to find a video online (even youtube) but they all said "this video has been removed by *** Broadcasting Company".

    Can someone post a link?!

ps. I think it's wrong for DBC to be able to remove the video if in fact they did just to save face in the mists of the bad publicity right now
