What to do with my Graco dropside crib?

As everyone knows, these dropside cribs are dangerous & I wish never chosen it. I thought it would be easier placing the baby in the crib but I've never once used the drop side. Not sure what to do now, get a new one or just face it against the wall. Even though we have the crib in our bedroom, it still makes me nervous. I can't imagine what those families felt seeing there child in the slats - makes me sick just thinking of it. Now I need to get a video monitor asap - can't take all these mommy worries.

  • I know, I'm in the same boat.  We do have a video monitor so that helps.  I think we will screw it to the head and foot board and turn it toward the wall.

  • I heard it is only the Storkcraft dropside cribs that are being recalled.
  • I have a dropside, and we drop it all the time. I also have breathable bumpers so I'm not worried about him getting stuck in the slates. I plan on facing it toward the wall when he's old enough to try to escape. I would not buy a new crib, and I'm not going to.

This is all that was reported by the CPSC.

  • FWIW we also have a crib tent.
  • I have a dropside crib and am not considering replacing it.  It hasn't been recalled and I looked over it and it is solid and sturdy.  I can't reach the mattress without dropping the side (I've tried), so I need a dropside.

It's not that the babies get caught between the slats - it is that that dropside separates from the crip so the baby can fall out completely and be strangled....think like they're kneeling on the floor and they've got their body between the dropside and the mattress....therefore the breathable bumbers don't make any difference....

If you have one of the recalled cribs please replace it or get the kit to fix it!

  • I would look it over and see how much "give" there is to the drop-side part.  If it is shaky or loose at all, I'd ditch it.  Otherwise I wouldn't worry. I have a drop-side one too and I did the same thing--mine seems very well built and I don't think there is any way a baby could wedge themselves between the mattress and side.

  • im having DH bolt, screw, nail--whatever, the drop side in tons of spots...I really wish instead of replacing the parts they would refund and let us buy a non-child-killing crib!
