30 wk u/s twins measuring small - also posted on SAIF

I could use some feedback/reassurance please.  We went to the MFM this morning and while both babies weights are good (2 lbs. 7 oz. and 2 lbs. 9 oz.), but they are measuring in the 3rd percentile size wise.  All of their blood and placenta flow look good right now, but the MFM is concerned and has asked us to come in every week for scans as oppsoed  to every other week.  I haven't been diagnosed with IUGR at this point, but they are keeping a close eye on me.  I've been on bed rest for three weeks already due to contrax.

What's keeping me sane is that DH and I are both small people (I'm 5'2" and DH is 5'6") and I was pretty small at birth (4 lbs. 15 oz.)

Any feedback/advice/reassurance would be appreciated.

  • My baby B fell way behind in growth at about 28w due to a velamentous cord insertion (bad hookup to the placenta) and so we also started having weekly ultrasounds. At around 31 weeks I also started having two NST's a week. I purposely scheduled them all on different days so that there was a greater chance of catching if baby B was under any distress. It was a lot of appts to balance with work, but worth it.

It sounds scary, but as long as you continue to have good umbilical cord blood flow and the babies are actually growing and healthy, they probably will not do anything until 36-37 weeks. I ended up being induced at 34w5d due to pre-e. She was 3lbs 12oz when born (Baby A was 5lbs 5oz) and perfectly healthy!

I would ask your doctor about getting the steroid shots at some point. I got them at 33w as a precaution so that if we saw that Baby B's blood flow decreased or she didn't pass her biophysical profile between 33-36 weeks that we wouldn't have to wait 48 hours for the shots in order to induce. I think this made a huge difference in their health at birth.

Both girls spent 10 days in the hospital as feeders and growers, but baby B has met every milestone with her sister and is working on catching up in size. It is great that your doctor wants to monitor this closely, but try not to stress too much since there is nothing more you can do. Good luck!

  • I was going in about every week at that time too .... constantly for that damn stress test as well.

At 37wks .... my supposed last u/s and week before I was to be induced .... the tech was very quiet ... said she needed to call my Dr. because A was measuring really small ... they thought she would be 3lbs or so ..... WRONG! She was 5lbs 7 oz.  So them telling me she was going to be tiny and seeing that they were wrong a few hrs later will make me think twice next time
