BF question... (XP from BF)

Please help~~~~I want to start pumping so DH can help with at least one feeding a day.  I pumped on Saturday, got 4ozs., but then my supply seemed messed up for the rest of the day and i ended up having to give the bottle to her just to try and calm her down.  I did not pump at all yesterday so that I could get back to 'normal'.  So my ? is how do I work in a pumping session without messing up my supply?    and advice is welcome~ thanks!

  • Try pumping after your daughter has already eaten.  You won't get much, but eventually you'll get a good stash, and it won't interfere with her meals!  It might increase your supply to do that, too, in case that would be a problem.

  • thanks~  I will give that a shot.  Should I pump on the same side that she fed on, or the other side??  (sorry if that is a stupid question)

  • When I pump, which isn't that oftenEmbarrassed, I usually do it at a time when he's missed a feeding. Like when he used to STTN I'd wake up engorged at 3 or 4 am and pump. He'd wake up a couple of hours later and not know the difference.

Those were the good old days. Now he can't sleep more than 2 hours so I never  have the chance.

  • It's not a stupid question!  :)

I suppose if you're worried about getting her fed, you could only do the side she finished each time...  I just pumped out everything right after feeding Margaux, and found I replenished in time for her next feeding.

Breast milk keeps in the fridge for about 8 days, so you should be able to build up bit by bit.  It got easier for me after the initial rush to stay ahead of her feedings!

  • I supplement one or two feedings a day with formula & actually started at 3 weeks. (because I felt she wasn't getting enough from the boob.) So I guess it's a little easier for me since I usually pump at that feeding. But another thing I do is pump after feeding her in the middle of the night. I find she is so tired at that time she falls asleep after 10 minutes so never completes the job. I get a little out of that boob & alot out of the other one.

The more they eat, the more you will start to produce. In my case my daughter doesn't eat a heck of alot & she is a snacker. I really wanted to start building up a supply to freeze but can never seem to get ahead either.

    Good luck.

    Agreed.

  • You could either pump on both sides after a feeding, or pump from the side she didn't take.

You won't really mess up your supply, it just takes a couple of days for your body to catch on and regulate.  Baby always gets more from the breast then the pump does.

I usually offered both sides at a feeding, although she did not always eat from both.  I then pumped from both sides after she ate.
