NBR: Question about weight loss

I've been in a huge rut regarding losing weight. I feel like I have a good amount to lose so if anybody else has gone through this and prevailed can you give me some advice or tell me how you managed to stay on task? I want to be healthier and happier in general.

  • You can read my blog if you want. It's in my siggy.  Blogging about it has been really helpful to me.  It's nice to have a community of people cheering me on and who I feel like I am accountable to.

Pre-pregnancy, I used weight watchers and I felt like it was a great program for me.  Again, I liked having a community of people (in the meetings) who I could talk to about struggles and victories.  And weighing-in each week helped to keep me accountable.  Weight Watchers is a good program because it teaches you the tools you need to make a lifestyle change.  It's not about dieting at all.  Even though I didn't do WW this time around, I definitely utilized the tools that I learned in WW.

  • The main way I lost weight after delivery was by setting a goal of achieving something with a time line -- like ECU I also trained for a half-marathon.  I plan to do this again after this pg in addition to planning to work out 3-4 times a week before starting my half-marathon training in late summer (don't want to wait till then to start lossing the weight!).

  • I hate exercise.  But after gaining 75 lbs. during PG, I needed to do SOMETHING.  A few years ago, I lost 15 lbs. by tracking calories, walking, and pilates.  It was tough work, but I did it.  Now it's hard to make time to do all of that, so I walk.

A few months ago, some girls on this board started a pedometer challenge, so I bought one.  I now use it to track my steps daily (you'd be surprised how little you actually move some days).  I think a good challenge is 70,000 steps per week.  It really gets you moving, plus, b/c you need steps, you move more around the house (for example, walking in place while brushing your teeth).  I swear, it all adds up.

Walking (combined w/ breastfeeding) is helping me sloooowly lose the weight, but whenever the day comes that I hit a roadblock, I'll start tracking calories.  You'd be shocked at how much you actually eat.  Self.com has some good calculators for healthy weight ranges, caloric needs, etc.

A few girls on this board did a 'no-eating-out challenge' - I think generally for more monetary reasons, but if you challenge yourself to not eat out for a month, I bet that'd help too.  Restaurant food has so many extra calories than what you'd make at home.

I keep track of my steps daily, and weight weekly (although I do weight myself a few times a week, and if I have a good weigh-in, I write it down too).  I have a goal of 1lb. per week - I think that's totally attainable and healthy.  But I've marked down a bonus weight - so if I lose a few more, I get a treat.  So in a 10 week period, if I lose 10, I hit my goal, but if I lose 13, I get a massage/pedicure/something fun.

I'm still wearing maternity pants, so hitting my weekly goal is VERY important to me.  I love food SO much, but I love regular jeans too - lol!

While I've lost a lot, I do still have some to go (I guess that's what happens when you gain as much as I did - lol!)  It's a slow and tough process, but if you work slowly, you'll get there!  If you ever want a walking buddy, let me know!  =)
