According to a database that we use to get new addresses for people that owe fines, the name does exist both le-a and la-a. As far as how it's pronounced I'm not sure but the name does exist. Also snopes has the status as undetermined, that means as far as their resources the name doesn't exist in that manner, but that's not to say it doesn't exist. I don't understand why this is claimed to be racist there are far worse names out there! I'd much rather have "Lee dash ah" as a name as oppose to some others I have heard.

This is the first time that someone has said anything that sounds remotely like evidence of this silly name being used.
How embarrassing for anyone who really has that name. Not only is it ridiculous, it's now considered an urban myth so it adds a whole other layer of crazy.
I just find it kind of insane that so many people know someone with this name, but NO ONE can offer any proof. I could even believe there are people named Le-a pronounced Leah, but I'll never believe "the dash don't be silent" until someone can prove it. Until then, I will assume that everyone who posts this is making fun of uneducated Americans, and particularly African Americans because of the stereotypical wording.
LOL! Didn't realize this was such a hot topic - would have never mentioned it if I knew! Just got a kick out of it while chatting with this woman at the spa this weekend!

I wish people would stop spreading this rumor. It's racist and it's really getting old.
Very original.
Ditto pp.
Yesterday I heard someone talking about "a friend who knows of someone who taught and had a student named L-a"...
I didn't even bother telling her that she's either lying or her friend is lying.
"This ribbon has been reported." - lovesnina
Not a rumor, met someone this weekend who named her daughter this. She did it for its uniqueness
*Headdesk*
PSA: PLEASE STOP POSTING L-A RUMORS. KTHXBAI.

This person said it better than I ever can:
