Baby Names

What do you think about this spelling?

We are considering the name Eliza, but the Hebrew spelling Aliza has a meaning we like better. ("Joy" rather than "my God is a vow")

Do you think people will assume we "made up" the spelling Aliza?  (I prefer traditional or classic spellings to yooneek ones....)  Or do you think this seems like a legit alternate spelling?  (Like I said, it IS legit, I just wonder if people think it LOOKS legit)  Smile

Re: What do you think about this spelling?

  • I would think you made it up, and then I would feel stupid when I learned it was its own, separate name, with a pretty meaning.

    This.

  • I would pronounce Eliza and Aliza differently.

If you are looking to have it pronounced the same as Eliza, I wouldn't do it.

  • Who cares what other people think?  YOU know it is legitimate and meaningful and that is all that matters.  I think it is pretty either way.

  • I would think you made it up.  And I'd probably try and pronounce it "Uh-leez-uh".

  • I'd think you made it up-I've never seen it spelled like that before. I do like the meaning though!

  • I pronounce them both the same.

I chose a not popular spelling for my sons name mostly based on it's meaning as well. I say go for it!

  • Eliza is on my list of favorites right now.  Honestly, I am also one of those who would think it was made up.  Even knowing the meaning, I still prefer the E spelling.  I personally do no pay too much attention to meanings so I wouldn't change the spelling based on the different meanings but it sounds like it is important to you. You will just have to know that many people will think you made it up.
  • my sisters name is Aliza... Eliza..i would pronounce E-liza...i like Aliza better ... dont know if that helped?

  • Honestly, I would think you were going the way of Olivia and Ahlivia, but if its what you prefer then that is all that matters.

  • Thanks for all the answers, ladies!  I do like it and my husband REALLY prefers it spelled this way (mostly because of the meaning, but he likes the way it looks, too...)  I will definitely keep it on the list!
