3rd Trimester

Talk to me about diapers, please

A friend gave me a gazillion diapers that her baby never fit into (disposables.)  Most of the diapers were from a diaper cake, so I don't have the original packaging, but each of the diapers is stamped with something like, "Huggies, NB" or "Huggies 1."  The size 1 diapers are blue, leading me to believe that maybe they're designed for boy babies, as opposed to the newborn diapers which are gender neutral colors like green and yellow.  I vaguely remember seeing ads for girl diapers and boy diapers a while back - something about where the "leak protection" is in the diapers specific to each sex.

We're having a girl - how much does it really matter if we did wind up with some boy diapers?  If they're really not going to be suitable for our baby, I'd rather pass them along to someone who can use them then to wind up with leaks.

Thoughts?

Re: Talk to me about diapers, please

  • I haven't seen boy or girl diapers in any store I have bought diapers from.

I know that Pampers are more blue colored than Huggies....

Maybe this is it...and maybe I'm imagining having seen those ads.  Embarrassed

    Thanks!

  • I've never seen girl vs. boy diapers. Maybe blue is for nighttime? More absorbent?
  • The only time I have seen girl VS boy diapers is for training pants (like Pull Ups). Not sure if there is really a difference other than the designs on the outside. We use a variety of brands...basically whatever is on sale...including Huggies and they have all been gender neutral. I think they change the design from one size to another to help you tell the difference between the sizes.
  • Diapers aren't usually gender specific. I'm not sure about the specific Huggies brand colors.  They do make gender specific pull ups, that have different leak protection.

I would assume (yes, I know what that can mean. :)) that the blue color is just a blue color.  I would use them if you like Huggies.  I never liked the Huggies for a new born, but I know others who loved them.

  • I remember the "girl" and "boy" diapers, but it's been a long time since I saw an ad for them. I'm not really sure if they make them like that anymore, but it's possible. I'd just use them all. If you notice some not working as well, then pass that kind along.
  • I do remember hearing that a long time ago, but I don't think that panned out, so now they are made to work for either.  If you're planning on breastfeeding, my personal favorites were Pampers swaddlers because they just held the liquid poo way better than any other, just experiment and you'll find out what you like.  You probably won't need more than one big package of newborn diapers.
  • I'm pretty sure that the gender specific diapers are for when they are much bigger than size one. They are supposed to fit more like girls and boys underwear.

There are different types of Huggies. Huggies pure and natural, snug and dry, little snugglers, and little movers. If they are a blueish tint, and a size one, they are most likely Huggies Snug and Dry. They are the cheaper of the huggies, but I really like them. If the NB sized ones have classic pooh, they are pure and natural, if not, they are most likely little snugglers.

*sigh* I never thought I would know this much about diapers. Hope this helps.

  • The Girl and Boy diapers were a marketing fad that went out years ago.  They no longer make those. You should be fine with the ones you have.
  • Other than pull-ups, I've never seen diapers for boys or girls separately.  Go ahead and at least try them.  Keep in mind that if they don't work, they aren't necessarily made for a boy, but every diaper brand fits babies differently.  We have never been able to use anything but pampers without leaking.  Other people we know could only use Huggies or luvs.  Some could use a store brand.  We couldn't unfortunately.

I remember boy/girl diapers... from several years ago.  The boy diapers were more absorbent in the front where they pee pee, and the girl diapers were more absorbent in the middle, where they pee pee!!!!

I don't think they make them anymore... but if they do and those are that kind of diaper, they're still absorbent all over.  I'm sure they'll still work, just maybe don't use them overnight...  ??????  HTH.

  • I think gender specific diapers is just marketing.  If the diaper fits, stick it on her!  She won't suffer any long term psychological damage by wearing a 'boy' diaper the first few days of her life.
