We bought about 5 of the 0-3 size & 10 of the 3-6 mo. size onesies, in addition to sleepers & outfits. According to friends w/babies, you should expect your LO to poo, pee or spit up multiple times a day, requiring more diaper & clothing changes than one would imagine.
I don't know if this will be enough, but I figured it would be a good start.

I'm starting with 5 white nb onesies and 5 white 3 month onesies, I also got a pack of the snap t shirts to use as well so they don't irritate her belly button
Think about how big she will be during the summer too, when you won't likely be layering and get fewer in that size (guessing 3-6m size). It also depends on how often you are willing to do laundry. In the beginning you could go through 3 - 5 in a day, but it tapers off. I have no idea the actual numbers tho, maybe 5-10 in 0-3m and 5 in 3-6.
The only ones I had were a few that coordinated with outfits
I did not use very many onesies at all, he was mostly in the sleep n play one piece outfits
I didn't use a whole lot of all white onesies either- maybe 3-4 of each size. Otherwise, they coordinated w/ outfits. And as they start eating rice cereal and then other baby foods, it gets quite messy so I usually aimed to get dark colored clothing/patterned so spills would blend in (not everything comes out in the wash!).

Oh shoot! Thanks for the reminder! We have a package of 0-3 and 3-6 so far but not sure how many...I do know at one point I said I needed to get more! Here I thought we were all ready for her...haha. Guess the next time I'm out I'll grab some!
we only use a few....since we have tons of cute pattern onsies. I do like the long sleeve ones to go under the cute pattern ones. We can easily get by with three.

Why do you imagine that she will wear a onesie underneath most outfits? Is it really cold where you are? Do you keep your house cold? I don't if she will be attending day care, but at DD's place, they keep the infant room a bit warmer than the others.
My DD was born in late June so we didn't put her in more than a diaper unless we had company or were leaving the house, but we don't layer onesies under other outfits now. You may need a few to go under little hoodie/pants outfits that you get, but many outfits come with a matching onesie.
newborn: white side snap t's, 5-pack long-sleeved onesies
0-3 mo: white side snap t's, 5 pack long sleeved onesies, 5 pack short sleeved onesies
3-6 mo: 5 pack long sleeved onesies, 5 pack short sleeved onesies
6-9 mo: 5 pack long sleeved onesies, 5 pack short sleeved onesies
I also registered for 5-packs of printed onesies and coordinating pants at 0-3 and 3-6 months.
I also figured a lot of people like to pick up this sort of thing for you, and that I would end u pwith more than enough If not, I can always go out and get them.

I got 10 in each size. I figure I won't be washing every day and would probably get colored onesies as gifts.
Let's just say that I have plenty in each size now!
