Babies: 3 - 6 Months

No, you should NOT give your LO Tylenol JUST so they'll STTN!!

DD is teething and has been waking up every hour or so all night long.  I talked to the nurse at her doctor's office yesterday and she said to give her half a dose of baby Tylenol to help her sleep.  Well, last night she STTN from about 9:30 to 8 this morning.  I mentioned this to my friend who has a 4 month old who wakes about every three hours throughout the night, not teething as far as she knows, just wakes to eat.  She told me she's going to give her baby Tylenol so she'll start STTN!  Seroiusly??  I tried to tell her she shouldn't and she said "Why not?  You did."  UGH!!!

  •  I didn't think Tylenol had anything in it to make them sleepy?

DD's fallen asleep after getting tylenol before but that's like after shots or when she had a fever and fell asleep because she wasn't feeling well and the meds helped her feel better so she could sleep.

  • That's so wrong! I really hope she doesn't.
  • Wow....I have no words!

It doesn't.  It relieves pain and/or fever.  If a child is teething, and they wake up from pain, it will help them sleep.  If a child is just a normal child and hungry, it won't do anything except tax their liver.

Sorry, yeah, this is what the nurse told me.  She said to try it for three nights, giving her just a half a dose before bedtime, and if she still wakes up, it might be something else, like a growth spurt, which Tylenol won't help.  I was pretty sure it was because of teething, she'd wake up crying and of chomping her mouth open and shut (not sure if you can picture this or not...).

  • DD has little white teeth-dots starting to poke through and seems SO uncomfortable.  Any time I give her tylenol day or night she falls right asleep.  I think it's because that's the only time she can sleep without being woken from pain.  Poor thing.  Good luck.
  • Gah, everyone knows you are supposed to give them whisky. Stick out tongue
  • That is so wrong (Edit: your friend, not your post).  The only reason why your LO STTN is because she was no longer in pain and she was probably catching up on sleep.  Tylenol doesn't make babies sleepy.
  • Oh, dear God.  It pains me that this person has a child that she's now responsible for.  It's making me wish people had to pass a test before being allowed to procreate.  Sorry if that offends you, since she is your friend, but come on.  :P

this.  there is NOTHING in the tylenol that will help them sleep.  I don't understand why someone would give their LO medication so they will STTN..  they don't make baby Ambien for a reason.  ha ha

Yes  Tylenol will only help an infant sleep if they are experiencing pain that is keeping them awake.  So, if the OP's friend's baby truly is waking to eat (and not because s/he's in pain), Tylenol is not going to help with that.
