Mastisis

Any advice?

I woke up with it today, it is awful!  My Mom is here to watch DS so he can be near and still nurse.

Re: Mastisis

  • When I had mastitis I called my doc and he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic.  Other than that, feed first on the infected side - you want the milk to drain completely each time, don't worry, your baby won't get an infection from feeding on that side.  Warm, moist compresses really helped soothe the pain for me.  I was already feeling better within two days of starting the antibiotics.  HTH.

  • My sister had it.  She needed antibiotics, and her doctor told her to get lots of rest.  He also was going to admit her to the hospital if she didn't improve after 48 hours of antibiotics.  Mastitis is pretty serious.
  • Thanks everyone, talked to the lactation consultant and the dr, on meds now.
  • Glad you're on meds - once I started the antibiotic it cleared right up. Something that helped was gentle massage and warm compresses (disposable diapers work great, actually!) Keep nursing on that side as much as possible. The affected side still seems to never have quite as much milk as the other (although I have no way to really know) and it's been 4-5 months since I had it.

    Hope you're feeling better soon.
