Baby Names

Thoughts on trendy names?

My H and I both really love the name Olivia (nm-Livi).  It is the name of a lady I grew up around, and she is in her 90's now. However, I feel that it has been a really popular name within the last 5 years or so.  This is sort of a turn off to me.  I.e. it was the #7 name in 2006.  Would this influence anyone else's decision on a name, or am I being silly?  And what do you think about the name Olivia Annmarie?

Re: Thoughts on trendy names?

  • Olivia is my all-time favorite girl name, too. However, if we're expecting a girl some day and it's still in the top 10, we probably won't use it. Sad

I like Annmarie as a mn.

  • I love the name Olivia.  Personally, I don't really care how popular the name is at the time, but that is a personal preference.  I like Annmarie as a first name but it doesn't really do anything for me with Olivia.
  • You have a personal use for it.  I' duse it.

Look, my name, Sarah, was in the top 10 from about 1974 on, and then dropped to the top 20 up until about 2 years ago.  THIRTY years of being in the top 10 and 20.

I dont' feel there is an over abundance of "sarah's" out there.

  • Personally, I wouldn't use it - but for many people the popularity of a name doesn't bother them.  It's really a matter of individual choice.  I do think Olivia is a very pretty name and I think it has a nice signficance in your case.

  • I don't think of Olvia as trendy. To me it is an old fashion name that is popular like Lillian, Elizabeth, Abigail, Sophia and Madeline.

Trendy names I think of: Avery, Peyton, Harper, Piper, Madison

It might be popular but it will be classic!

    I love the nn Livy!

  • Olivia is extremely popular (#6 in the US in 2008).  It was also #6 in Oklahoma (looks like that is where you are from), but look at the chart below.  That means that 180 children were named Olivia.  When you break it down like that, I don't think that is a lot at all.  Especially since the population of the state of OK in 2008 was more than 3.5 million!

A girl after my own heart!  I love real data! Dork, I know.

  • I have always loved the name and I still do. I would never use it now because of how popular it is.If it is in the top 100 on ssa.gov I don't even consider it. I am weird, I know.

  • It's beautiful and classic. Use it if you love it!

  • yes, because I am generally anti-trendy, so much so that I wouldn't use a name over #500 on the SSA list.

I am SOOO over Ava, Olivia, Sophia and Isabella.  Everyone I know seems to have one of these.

  • It's popular because it is a great name. I'd rather call by DC a name I loved then one I half liked because another child might have the same name.
  • Olivia is classic, but it is very popular right now.  I know a lot of baby Olivias, but if it doesn't bother you, then use it! Smile

  • I love Olivia but not a fan of Annmarie!

  • Totally agree with looking at the real data.  My DH pointed this out to me.  When our parents were being born (and even in our generation), there just wasn't the wide variety of names out there that there is now. People get really creative nowadays and there are tons of different names.  That means that even if you pick a name in the top 100 or even top 10 the percentage of people with that name is waaaaaaaaay lower than a name that held that same rank 20 years ago.  So you have to think in absolute instead of relative terms.
  • olivia is very pretty,  when you tack annemarie to the end, it sounds a bit mouthy to me.  that's 7 syllables just in the first two names!
  • Olivia is NMS, but if I loved it, I would use it regardless of the popularity.
