Anyone Make their own bedding?

What pattern did you use (need a pattern for a bumper and skirt). Also-how much fabric did you use for bumper & skirt? I'd like to do two coordinating fabric for the bumper-so a different fabric on each side. Thanks!

Re: Anyone Make their own bedding?

  • My mom made all my sister's bedding.  I am not sure what pattern she used, but I could find out for you.  It had a bumper, curtains, valance, crib skirt, and they had extra fabric, so she made a matching dog bed too.

I made our curtains, valance, pillows and a quilt.  I didn't use a pattern though.  I just measured the windows and sewed the curtains to the size I wanted.

  • I did and absolutely love it.  I made the bedskirt alot longer than those you buy in the store and we just tucked it under as we lowered the bed.   I used my bumper pad foam filling as a guide and literally just used the measurements from our crib.  It worked great that way because we adapted the ties on the bumper pad to the crib railings. I know that most of your pattern makers...McCall's, Simplicity will each have one depending on the style you are looking for.
  • I'm in the process of making the bedding.  I'm just kind of winging it, using the measurements of the crib.  The bumper and crib skirt are pretty straight forward.  But Simplicity and Kwik-Sew both have some simple patterns you could use as a guide.
  • I am going to use the Amy Butler book -- I think it's called Little Stitches or something like that. There's a pattern for the crib bumper, fitted sheet, blanket, and possibly some kind of window treatment.

  • I just bought a simplicity pattern today.  it was on sale at joanns for $2.
  • I totally winged it.  I am not a pattern girl.

For bumper pads---I used measurements from foam padding pkg: https://www.poly-fil.com/nufoam.asp  I did one fabric on one side, one fabric on the other and grossgrain ribbons for the ties.  I machine sewed 3/4 of the way around then crammed in the foam and whipstitched to close.

For crib skirt: I used 2 fabrics and pinned it up as it got lower like PP did.  I made mine in three pieces sewn to a center piece (of a cheaper fabric to save money).  So that way, there were no issues around the legs/corners and it is a custom fit.  I sewed 2 ties to the back to secure it to bed.

For accent pillow:  Made pillow size I wanted with coordinating fabrics, stuffed it full of foam, whipstitched it closed.

For Valances:  Used the 2 fabrics and ironed on a lightweight interfacing to stiffen it up some.

I also made coordinating lamp, bookshelf, canvas wall art and upholstered toy box.
