I went with the Classica 1 (spring) after recommendations on baby bargains as well as here. They also make a foam version.
What ever you get, make sure it is firm which is best for baby
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

We just bought our crib and mattress this week and we chose a Serta. I think it's 150 Springs. It's firm and fits our crib very snug. It's pretty thick too; not all flimsy like some of the others we saw.
I've just been researching mattresses and think we're definitely going with foam (lighter, easier to change the sheets on, and less expensive). I think we're going with the Colgate Classica I as well, which has great reviews and isn't too expensive.
The consumer reports website recommends that if you get a spring mattress, it should have at least 135-150 coils and the gauge on the coils should be 15.5 or heavier (the lower the number, the heavier the gauge). Most mattresses only list the number of coils, making it sound great if it's got 200+ coils, but you also have to look at how thick the coils are.
I'm not sure about their recommendations for a foam mattress...
Yes, firm is best. If you think it feels good, it's probably not firm enough for baby.
