Vacationing with the LO

Timm and I are thinking of next year's vacation.  Probably around November to Hawaii.  Timm has never been.

Are we crazy to attempt a 5 hour plane ride with a 7 month old?

What is/was your first vacation with your baby?
How old was your LO?
What was your travel time?

TIA!

Re: Vacationing with the LO

  • We went on a cruise when I was about 20 weeks along with my mom, step-dad and baby sister who was about 1 1/2 at the time. The port was in Charleston so we just drove instead of flying, so we were in the car for (I think) 8 hours and she actually did really well. Granted, there's a big difference between a 7 month old and and 1 1/2 year old...but she did well!

We're going to Florida twice next year and we're semi-concerned how Soph will do. She'll be 6 months the first time and 11 months the 2nd time. We'll see I guess!

  • I'll let you know in about a month!  We're flying to Florida to Jeff's parents for Christmas.
  • The first trip will be a 3 hour train ride to Paris next month when Nathan is a month old to get his passport... The next trip is in April when Nathan is five months and that will be a 10 hour car ride to Italy, the next trip will be my parents in the summer that is a 14 hour plane ride when Nathan will be 7 months old, and then we will be in Romania the entire month of August and if we drive it's 3 1/2 days if we fly it will only be five hours!  I'm hoping the little one will be fond of traveling!
  • Ashley, I wouldn't sweat it too much...  Peter's friends and family do it with their LOs all the time (back and forth to Greece) sometimes as much as 3Xs a year.  That's what convinced me that we'll be fine next summer.  And 5 hours isn't too bad - even if your LO hates the flight, it's not all that long and IMO, worth it for Hawaii.
  • I'm pushing for a Hawaii trip next December.  Our friends said that they are planning a trip so I'm hoping that we can go too.  I've been telling Jeff that I want to go before Gavin turns two so we don't have to pay for a ticket.  & his parents have a timeshare over there that we could probably use.
  • Not a problem at all- just pack a lot and you'll be fine!
  • What is/was your first vacation with your baby?  DH was just trying to plan his b-day extravaganza for next year & that just got kiboshed b/c the baby will not be 6 months old yet & Carnival Cruises requires the child to be at least 6 months old, no exceptions!
We are also looking into, IMO, a lengthy car ride (about 10 hrs) to visit my Grandparents shortly after the LO is born, about 6-8 weeks old.....the baby may do fine, but I may not b/c his driving skills are the worst!!
How old was your LO?  Only time will tell as I don't really want anything set in stone in case we just have a really poopy schedule w/ the baby or s/he is irritable, etc.  I WANT FLEXIBILITY TO CANCEL IF NEED BE!!
What was your travel time?  The road trip would be about 10 hrs.  But we are kinda back to the drawing board w/ this since baby won't be old enough for a cruise--his b-day plans are ruined  Crying

Dex, are you saying that I can't just pack 3 outfits, a day's worth of diapers (as we plan to cloth at the moment) & just a couple of toys to occupy the baby?!
I can just wash the clothes/diapers in the sink, right?!  Wink

Annie- if you find packing for a NB to be torturous just wait until you pack for a toddler! OMFG!

I like the flexibility of road trips when they are really young because babies typically love to sleep in the car- though, don't quote me on that, because Peyton had reflux and used to scream in the car until I dissolved into a heap of a bubblering mess and had to pull over...eentually, though- this too, did pass.

  • My sister flies quite often with her LO, most recently they took an 8 hour flight to Mexico for our wedding with a 2 year old and 2 month old. Both did great. Her biggest thing is to plan the flight around a time that their are happiest, or when they will be sleeping if they are on a good schedule. That way, she didn't have to wake them up early in the morning or go too long without a nap to where they would be cranky.
  • What is/was your first vacation with your baby? I flew from CA to NY with Maddie when she was 4 months old. I have actually flown home with her lots of times, about half of those times alone with her.  We also took her to st lucia to the wedding when she was 1 1/2.  I also took Josh to Seattle from CA he was only 2 months old(again by myself).  Everything went fine. Actually found it easier when they are just babies(as opposed to toddler)

Im contemplating taking him to NY with me in December for a long weekend, but again I'll be by myelf and it is such a short trip I may just leave him home with daddy.

We should try to go at the same time!  What island?

I keep telling Timm that we need to plan a bunch of vacations before Baby C turns 2.

  • While we weren't vacationing but actually moving to Mexico when Ian was a little over a month old, the 2.5 hour plane ride was uneventful. I BF him as we were taking off and landing and he did fine.

My mom is turning 50 in February and  wants to take us to Spain or on a Cruise, LO would be a little over 2 months old. I am pretty hesitant to go even though I would love to go on a vacation with her.
