I think that it was this board that people were saying that. I have always put pretty much everything except bones in the disposal, and have been meaning to ask this, especially since I just peeled a bunch of potatoes and the skins are currently sitting in my sink.

Re: Why no potato peels in the garbage disposal?
NOOO - - DON'T DO IT!!
It might clog your disposal beyond repair! It's not worth the risk, I know from experience. Just scoop them into the trash.
Yeah, I have no idea. And I've only ever killed one disposal and that was when I accidentally put a steak bone in there....oops.

I won't throw a huge amount of pasta down there. That's clogged up the disposal before and that wasn't fun.
They can clog up the disposal. My mom put a bunch down her disposal once and it threw up potato peels everywhere! They came back up the sink, the pipe underneath cam apart and they came out the cabinet. It was a disaster.

Ditto this. Had this happen before!!! Sucks major time
Too funny. I just looked up my disposal and one of the first things it mentions in the item description is the ability to grind up potato peels.

I've worked for a plumber for 10 years now and my husband is a plumber. Yes, the model does matter, the higher grade the more stuff it can handle. The reason you can't put certain things down it is because it will get stopped up. We ended up taking our disposal out completely, we kept having stoppages even with the best disposal (being married to a plumber does have some perks lol).
When I was in college I put shrimp shells down mine. Baaaaaaaaad idea. So yeah, I'm pretty picky about what goes down ours

DH just clogged out with potato peels this weekend. He had to undo it all to get the clog out, it was disgusting!
I have also been told to never put strawberry tops down it, but that one seems weird to me.
I would be lost if I couldn't feed my disposal anything and everything in my kitchen!
Whole oranges have been eaten by my disposal, not to mention the accidental things! We have the insinkerator (or whatever) I don't know the HP or anything but I would say it's a good one. All the leftovers when I clean out the fridge, including tons of pasta, whole bananas, whole pork chops...I could go on and on!
