Crib Box Spring and Mattress

Do I need a box spring for our babies crib. I have been told by a few people that it helps the baby sleep and gives more support to a babies back then just a mattress on springs. I have never heard of having to use a box spring... but then when i think about it, where does the crib skirt go. Anyone have some ideas for me on this. I am not sure whether I need one or not? I have a convertible crib that has springs underneath the mattress, no box spring yet...

I've never heard of the box spring idea. I would ask over in the Nurseries board. Maybe they can help.

I didn't know box springs even existed for cribs! We used just a mattress with DS, he was perfectly happy with that.

What?  I've NEVER heard of this.  I think most cribs would be unsafe with it...

They don't make box springs for cribs. That wouldn't be at all safe. The mattress lays on a board or a spring platform.

I've never heard of a box spring.  DS's crib just has wooden slats across the bottom, and the skirt worked fine when we had it in the high position, but not once we lowered it because the screws or something are in the way.

Umm....I didn't even know they had these and I think it is kind of silly. It may be okay in a crib at first too but once they get old enough to stand up, you can only lower it so much. They'd fall out b/c it would be up too high.
