second thoughts on Elise

I love the name but am worried about it being mispronounced. Is this irrational? So far is it the only name that we have agreed. With DD #1 it took us the full 40 weeks. I don't want to go down that road again.

  • I think it's a nice name.  You want to pronounce it El-eese, right?  I think it's cute and shouldn't be a problem.  Yes

  • I agree with pp, I've never heard of another way to pronounce it. It's a nice name. I'd stick with it. Smile
  • I was worried people would pronounce it Ee-lease. I guess I have to stop second guessing myself and stick with it.

  • I prefer Elyse, but I don't think that Elise would be misprounced.

  • I like Elise a lot, unfortunately it doesn't work with our name. But anyway... I also work with a woman named Elise, and I've only heard one person pronounce it "wrong"--and she does this consistently, so I wonder if that's just how she thinks it's pronounced, even though everyone else says it "right."

  • I've only heard it pronounced one way. I can't imagine it will be mispronounced often. Go for it. Beautiful name!
  • I think Elise is really pretty.  If you are concerned about mispronouncing maybe change the spelling to Alysse?

  • Funny you say that.  I worked with an Elise and we all wore name badges with our first name on it.  The UPS man always called her Elsie (like the cow).  I'm sure he was just reading her name wrong.  Anyway, one day she finally just kind of exploded on him and said her name was prounced ELISE...not Elsie.  The doctor heard her say this and wrote a note to her and asked me to give to her.  It started out:  L. C.  blah...blah...blah.  It took her a minute to figure out what he was doing.  BTW...the UPS man never ever said her name (correct or incorrect) after that.

Personally, I don't think people would misprounce it...unless they think it actually says Elsie.

  • We have very close friends who named their daughter this.  It is very hard for me to pronounce, I want to say Ah-lise.  But I always have to work hard to enunciate the names Alisa, Elisa, and Elise.

  • I love this name!  I pronounce it ay-LEASE (French way), but I've heard other people say Uh-LEASE.  I did know one woman with this as her name, but she pronounced it Uh-LEASE-uh, but that always seemed strange to me.  How are you thinking it should be pronounced?
  • I really like Elise, I would think it is common enough were people wont mispronounce it.

  • DD#1 is Elyse and I love love love her name.  So far the only way people have said her name wrong is by not reading it correctly and calling her Elsie.  That has only happened a very few times.  Good luck...but I vote for Elyse...we love it!
  • Very pretty name and I don't think it would be mis-pronounced.  I would not change the spelling as someone suggested just to try to get people to say it right.  That is silly!
