The name Lila...

Ok, so we have pretty much decided on this and I really like it, but maybe not as much as our DS's name.  Probably 90% of people who I tell say they love it too.

But then, I heard someone this week pronounce it Lil-a (like Lil with an a on the end) and I really want a name that doesn't get mispronounced.

And then a friend of mine said she's never heard of this name...I thought it was pretty classic.

I just wish there was a PERFECT name!!!

Re: The name Lila...

  • Before I came on this board, I'd never heard of Lila either and I thought it was pronounced Lil-uh. I wouldn't call it classic..it's become pretty trendy.
  • My cousin is named Laila. Everyone pronounces it LIE-la...which she prefers. Technically, she was named after a relative who pronounces the same name Lie-EE-la.

And, for fun, we sometimes call her LIL-a. But that's just to be silly.

My advice: most will know that the name is LIE-la. The rest can simply be corrected. Don't sweat it.

  • I see a post about Lila on here pretty much every day so I'm not sure why your friend had never heard of it; it's not all that uncommon. And I don't think it's a commonly mispronounced name so I wouldn't let that one person's incompetency dissuade you from using it.

  • I need a good famous person reference for this name--I guess the days of Lila Quartermain on General Hospital are a little outdated, huh?
  • To me, Lil-a would be Lilla. I would definitely pronounce it Lie-luh. And I think the name is pretty popular so I'm surprised your friend hasn't heard it!
  • Lila is a very popular name.

I think of Sweet Valley Twins :) That is where I first heard it and I have always thought it was a pretty name. Unfortunately, with Lila, you may get several pronunciations- Lie-la, Lee-la, and Lill-a are the 3 ways you can choose to say it.

  • People are morons.  You will always find one in the bunch who would find a way to mispronounce a name.  That said, I have always heard "Lila" pronounced as lie-la.  It's classic, true, and that's why it's trendy now, too, as classic names appear to be the trend.

  • My daughter's name is Lila and it gets pronounced wrong all the time!  The most common one is people will say it like Lee-la.  When we picked out the name we thought that there wouldn't be any doubt how it was pronounced.  Maybe you could spell it Lilah or Lyla and people wouldn't get as confused?  I don't know.  I still adore the name though.
  • In my opinion, Lila is a great name and I think "Lie-luh" when I see it.

If you love it, and DH loves it, then it's perfect for you.  Like PP said, don't sweat it!  Some people will just have to be corrected.

  • I just want to say our DD is Lilah, and we LOVE her name, and pretty much everyone who hears it does too.  The only one who mispronounces it is my Poppa, who mispronounces everything.  He calls my sister Danielle "Dan-ell" and calls a chimney a "chimley".  But he's old, so it's cute.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • i graduated high school with a girl named Lila.. we always pronounced it Lie-luh (kinda like lilac).  I have never heard her reffered to has Lil-a.
  • It's definitely a name that's been around but is now trendy, like Layla and Lily (but not as popular yet--popular and trendy are different). Anyway, I've always liked it since Lila McCann (the teenage country singer from the '90s). I don't think most people will mispronounce it, but if you're looking for a true "classic," I wouldn't say Lila is. That doesn't mean it's not gorgeous.
  • I love it, it does remind me of Sweet Valley High though.
    Sadie is not impressed.

  • I LOVE Lila, it is on my list.  It is a pretty classic name and I've never heard it pronounced any other way.
