  • I love Gentry for a boy. My old boss' name is Gentry and he's a cool guy. I guess I am in the minority here, but I think Gentry is a nice name!
  • I tend to like last names as first names...and my sister made the suggestion.

I searched the first name on facebook and google (ex. linkin) and found its a commonly used name for both genders but I am leaning towards for a girl.

    Ditto.

  • I think it sounds good for a girl too--as long as the middle name is OBVIOUSLY girl...
  • I don't like it for either. ?It seems very stuffy and like a fake name you'd see on a soap opera.

  • I keep saying the name and the more I say it, I really love it...we shall see...

    I'm adding it to the list..and it's a looong list right now..hehe

  • Have heard it as a word, but not a name!  The word means Upper Class, which I find as a sort of snobby thing to name someone.
  • Well...I like William.

  • Horrible for either a boy or a girl, spelled with a /y/ or /ie/ at the end.  Please, please choose something else.

  • My sister loves Gentry for a boy!
  • I instantly thought of Montgomery Gentry. NMS.
  • A last name. Seriously, it was my neighbors' last name.

Honestly, it sounds like you're trying too hard to come up with an uncommon name.

  • It is different, i definitely agree.

In my family, the girls have have some wildly uncommon names like:

Blakely, Brinn, Paige, Dempsey, Deblois, London, Lakin, Carleigh...

sounds like a soap opera around here sometimes!!!

  • Montgomery Gentry?

This.  The "Beyond Jennifer and Jason" Baby Name ladies have a category called "too much to live up to" and that is what I would call Gentry.

  • What comes to mind when I hear Gentry?

That's a social class, not a first name.

    Please don't.

ETA: And, JMHO, but "Gentrie" is almost ironically wrong.

  • Gentry is actually a really popular name for girls where I live.

It's like an old, no-longer-existing historic town in this area, and there's also a Gentry Cemetary, Gentry Creek, etc.

    It's not a boy's name.

I also have a cousin named Jyntre, but I don't like the spelling.

  • No, don't do it!

  • I love Gentry for a boy. I used to work for a doctor whose last name was Gentry. He went to England and met several guys with that as a first name. He suggested it to me for a name and I laughed but now I'm considering it. I have to convince him I am not naming my kid after him, though.
  • I know one boy Gentry who's a preschooler. To me, it seems too aspirational, as in no one who actually was "gentry" would name their child that.

Also, I agree spelling it Gentrie is pretty much ironic.

  • Nope. "The gentry" is another way of saying "the commonfolk." I do like the nn "Gent" for a little boy. Maybe another name? Who knows?

  • It's nms, but I do know a guy with the name Gentry. I think he is around 19. He has brothers Graham and Park.
  • I like it a lot! Very different.

I wouldn't mess with the spelling though, like a pp says, spelling it Gentrie to me makes it seem ironic

Gentry for a boy though sounds nice, I'm a fan
