My DH installed the wainscotting in our nursery this summer. It was his first attempt to do so. All it really took was a router bit. Then the pieces fit together like a puzzle. To do the entire room took about $700 in mdf materials, paint, & router bit (70 dollars itself), we borrowed a nail gun and the other tools.
The wainscotting is about 5 feet tall. We looked into the kits but we found it more cost effective to do it ourselves.
