Baby Names

hyphenation and two names...

What's your opinion?

We're thinking of calling LO Zoe Kate... I love the name Kate.  Should we hyphenate it: Zoe-Kate or just leave it as Zoe Kate?

ALSO - is the two name thing a big deal?  I always think of Mary-Kate Olsen and I wonder if the two name thing was just a trend.  What do you think?

  • I love double names! They are popular in the south. Zoe Kate is adorable.

  • I have a double name and it is the bane of my existence.   I WISH someone had stuck a hyphen in there so people would get it.

And I'm not from the South, but it's an Irish thing, too, I guess.

  • My first name is hyphenated:  Katie-Maria.   I've always gone by Katie though.  Having a hyphenated name can be annoying (a lot of online applications don't accept hyphens) but I like that it's unique.

I sorta like Zoe-Kate, but I think if you do Zoe Kate, nobody will call her that.  She'll just be Zoe.

  • If you are in the south, people might get it, but where I'm from you would need the hyphen so people would actually call her Zoe-Kate.

  • Zoe Kate is a great name!  I agree, no need for the hyphen.
  • I like Zoe Kate but the first name Zoe is VERY popular. If I was going to do a double name, it would be two names that are not super popular as first names.

  • I see no need for a hyphen. The name is adorable, double names can be cute if it's the right combo. I knew a little girl named Sarah Grace and she went by both names. Very cute on her.
  • Due to the fact that I live in the south and everyone has two names I now hate two name names. If I have to hear one more "Margaret Ann" "Kate Ann" "Clara Belle" "Beth Ann" I am going to have to die.

Unless you are Irish Catholic and are naming your child something with Mary in it then just give your child one name. You also have to think about the fact that your little girl is not always going to be a little girl. One day she might be 40 years old in a board room and having the name  Zoe Kate doesn't exactly scream mature and responsible it says "Hi I am 6 years old and love my pig-tails".

  • Double names are NMS, but I would understand if it was a traditional name like Mary Kate.  I would not hyphenate it.

  • I have a double name with no hyphen and love it. Hyphens seem "harsh" to me.

It was a little challenging in elementary school when my middle name was dropped and I had to correct teachers on the first day. But nothing lasting.

  • At all the companies where I've worked...it would have to be ZOEKATE.  We are not allowed to use hyphens in first or last names...and no spaces either.  It messes up the programs.
