DD isn't quite 2 yet. But the weight limit on the infant's Motrin goes up to 23 pounds. And DD is almost 25 pounds. Should I continue giving her infant's Motrin or can I switch to children's at this point and give her the dose for 2 year olds?
Our pedi said could switch back at her 18 month appt, Megan was only 22 lbs at the time. So she gets the children's suspension now, I don't remember the dose I called the pedi to get it last time though.
You never have to really. The concentration is just different that's all. We use Infant concentration in kids all the time at work. I haven't done a cost comparison but to me less medicine = easier to give. Dosing should be weight based, not only age based. Ask your pediatrician.
Lots of numbers, read at your own risk!
For her weight she can should have a Motrin dose of 114 mg (2.8 ml of "50mg per 1.25ml" infant suspension). Children's is only 100mg/5ml, so you'd have to give about 6ml of it to equal the dose of ~2.8ml of Infants. I dunno about you but even as much as Abby loves to take meds, it's usually easier to give her less volume KWIM?
Also important to note that using ages under-doses many kids (and over-doses some). Under dosing means the fever doesn't come down and/or the pain doesn't go away. Perfect example, the Children's dose for ages 2-3 or 'approx 25-35 lbs' is just 1tsp or 100mg. That's not even enough for your kid and 35lb kid can/should have 159mg of Motrin! We end up "topping off'" kids that aren't responding to meds at home because they're not getting enough. Mind you, most kids are NOT that sensitive and a little medicine will go a long way - but if the fever is 105, you better bet they need every last mg they can have.
