I was at the doc's yesterday and a woman was there with a baby boy. He was crawling around and she called his name- obvsly I don't know the spelling but it was pronounced stef-ahn-i. Like Gwen's last name. But basically, this lady named her son Stephanie. W.T.F?

I was just thinking this.
so, it is ok for girls to be named "boy" names but not the other way around?

This. And it was probably just an affectionate form of the baby's actual name which was probably Stefan. If she didn't pronounce it like Stephanie, why would you think she named her son Stephanie?
Ditto
this is mean.
p.s. no offense to anyone with that name, but i don't think Stephanie is even a nice name for a girl.
A friend of mine would say "Steph and I" did this... or "Steph and I" went there. So her DH started calling me "Steph-N-I"
But that sounds like it isn't the case here. Maybe she was European? Stephanie in German is pronounced a lot like (Gwen) Stefani. And probably in Italian, too.
