Baby Names

A boy named Stephanie...

I was at the doc's yesterday and a woman was there with a baby boy. He was crawling around and she called his name- obvsly I don't know the spelling but it was pronounced stef-ahn-i. Like Gwen's last name. But basically, this lady named her son Stephanie. W.T.F?

  • Are you sure it wasn't Stephan, pronounced Steff-un? That's an actual boy's name. Much more traditional boy than Caden or Jaden.
  • It was probably Stefan (or Stephan) and you say it "Steff-ahn". Maybe mom added the "ie" sound as a private nn like we do sometimes ;)
  • Someone watched "Baby Mama" too many times.
    Sadie is not impressed.

so, it is ok for girls to be named "boy" names but not the other way around?

  • maybe it was a girl.
  • Is it worse than naming a girl Jordan, Ryan or Cameron?

This. And it was probably just an affectionate form of the baby's actual name which was probably Stefan. If she didn't pronounce it like Stephanie, why would you think she named her son Stephanie? Confused

  • Stefani is actually a popular Italian last name.  Maybe it was the mom's maiden name.  However that boy will be correcting people for the rest of his life.

  • this is mean.

p.s. no offense to anyone with that name, but i don't think Stephanie is even a nice name for a girl.

  • It was not Stephan, it was stef-ahn-i. At first I considered that his name was Stephan and she was like, cuteing it up, but every time she said his name she said it that way. And I also am not down with naming girls dude names either. To me this is akin to naming a boy Stephanie because it is basically that name but pronounced sliiiiightly different. That's like naming a girl Richard and then being like, we pronounce it reeeeshar so it's a girl's name now.

  • A friend of mine would say "Steph and I" did this... or "Steph and I" went there. So her DH started calling me "Steph-N-I"

But that sounds like it isn't the case here. Maybe she was European? Stephanie in German is pronounced a lot like (Gwen) Stefani. And probably in Italian, too.
