Changing last name question..

So I haven't officially changed my last name since I got married and I think it's bothering my DH. I know I have to go to social security first but what do I need to bring? Do I just fill out the forms there? I hate doing this kind of stuff!!

Re: Changing last name question..

  • I know, I need to get that sh*t taken care of too.  Yuck, it seems like so much work....

  • I think I took my marriage certificate, and my SS card. And a photo ID. It was really easy, but the wait was long. I filled out the forms there. I got there a half hour before the opened, and was still like 40th in line. All in all it only took about 2 hours of my time though.

  • I'd bring your certified marriage certificate and something official with a picture id like a license/passport.I'm sure that if you call/go online to the SS office they'll tell you, but if my memory serves that is what I brought when I did mine. There may have been a form, I think I got it online so I wouldn't have to stand in line twice (once to ask for it, once to bring it for processing).

I agree, it is a pain in the neck changing your name. That's why boys don't do it I guess! Good Luck!

  • Bring your marraige license birth certificate and drivers license.  Bring a good book to read just in case there's a wait :)

  • Go to the SS website. They will tell you exactly what you need to do.
  • Social Security office first, then they will give you a form/letter to bring with you to the DMV. I was lazy about changing mine too, I didn't do it until we were married almost a year.

  • The SS office wasn't that bad for me!  I just brought in my marriage certificate, SS card, and passport (or other ID) I believe ... it didn't take long at all. It was the DMV that was the pain in the @ss!!!

  • I just went to social security and brought my marriage certificate. That's all. They changed it right away and ordered me a new card.

  • i remember having to fill out a form that asked for both my parents' social security numbers. Definitely didn't have that on hand, so maybe check online to see if there's a form.

  • I had to bring my SS card, my drivers license, my marriage certificate and  my birth certificate
  • I went to SSA.gov and filled out the form to change name, mailed it along with my marriage license (certified copy) to the local social security office.  And, had it back within 2 weeks.  Then you have to go to DMV to do new license (that was the worst part) and banks etc.

  • i just did this last week.  don't feel bad, it got married in august 2008 and am doing now.  and that's only because i'm KU.  there is a form you need but you can print that from ssa's website.  if you don't know both parent's ss# it's ok.  bring your original ss card, birth certificate, and marriage license.

mine was pretty easy and i was in and out in a half an hour.  i'm just waiting until my mom gets home from her trip abroad to change it at the DMV.  if your license and your passport don't have the same name, they'll give you tons of hassel.  GL!

and i kept saying "i'm not changing my name....i'm just adding to it!"

  • Admittedly... I did the SS office but nothing else.  I'm SUCH a slacker.  But I only got married in August, so I'm not doing to badly, eh?

Protip:  I went to the SS office at 3:30 PM on a Friday and I whizzed through.  Seems like you're only there forever if you've lost your original card and need a new one, rather than have a name change... haha.

  • I brought my license and birth certificate to the social security office. After you get your social changed you can do everything else. Do the drivers license next and everything else is just a matter of calling or going by and changing just with your drivers license. Some advice. They cute my old license in half and I kept it in my purse until everything changed over just in case things were under my old name, like credit cards and stuff.

  • i took my marriage license and driver's license and once that was straight, i went to the DMV for my new driver's license.
  • Make sure its an original marriage cert, and not a copy.
