2nd Trimester

Migraines :(

I've had migraines for years but they are very frequent during pregnancy (every other week lately).  They seem to be getting worse.  Anyone else?  What do you do to help?  I'm doing Pepcid for nausea, Tylenol, and some caffeine.

Re: Migraines :(

  • Talk to your ob. A coworker of mine gets bad migraines with every pregnancy, and she was prescribed Tylonal 3.

  • I've been dealing with them as well.  I got migraines for years and then when I got pregnant I started getting them more frequently.  I feel one coming on now actually but I had to come into the office today.  There isn't much to do really, I try to rest when I'm getting (or have one), cold compress, or sometimes a warm shower helps.  My husband made me hot tea with a little sugar last week and it actually seemed to help take the edge off (it was the early stage of one).  Tylenol has never really worked for me although it got so bad a few weeks ago I did try it - no help.  My doctor said if I wanted and they got really bad (and/or frequent) she could prescribe something for me - perhaps Tylenol with coedine?
  • Definitely talk to your doctor.  I never technically had migraines but do suffer from really bad headaches.  Excedrin usually helped me function but obviously that's not an option during pregnancy and Tylenol wasn't helping a bit.  They put me on Fioricet and it has definitely helped.

  • I brought it up with my OB last time I went in and they told me to "hang in there".  I'm allergic to codeine so Tylenol 3 is not an option for me.  I agree, Tylenol alone doesn't touch the pain. :(

bedebum: I'm sorry you had to go in to work!  I worked through it yesterday but I called in today, I just can't do it with the nausea.

I've never heard of it, I looked into it and it's not something that I know I'm allergic to - which is a good start. :p  I'll ask my OB.  Thanks!

They recommended this over codeine for me anyway because it won't make you sleepy - a plus if you have to take it at work! :)  I take one probably twice a week and the doctor said that was fine.  It's actually better than 2 Tylenol every 4 hours like I had been doing.  I hope you feel better!

  • Fioricet is great.  I've had migraines for years but can't take my regular migraine medicine.  This stuff seems to be prescription strength Excedrin Tension Headache.  But it works, doesn't make me sleepy or feel drugged, and it seems to work pretty quick.
  • I would definitely talk to your doctor. There is stuff they can prescribe for you so you don't have to suffer. I hope you feel better! My doctor mentioned that he would prescribe Tylenol with Codeine for my headaches if they didn't get better.

  • MY OB gave me vicodin. My preinatologist also agreed that it was perfectly fine. Its tylenol based so it safe. I would talk to your OB and STRESS that you want to do something about it, otherwise they won't take you seriously.

  • I had a severe headache lasting for days a couple weeks ago, and my doctor also prescribed Fioricet for me. By the time I got the prescription, the headache was beginning to taper off and I was able to control the pain with Tylenol. But the first day of it, Tylenol didn't even touch it, so if I get another one, I'll take one of the Fioricet. I don't like the idea of taking a prescription strength painkiller while pregnant, and Fioricet can be habit-forming, so I'm trying to avoid it. But being in excruiating pain is not good for the baby either - I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons and talk to your doctor.
