What food do you think is horrible...

So the waffle post got me thinking, there are a couple of common foods I think are terrible, but other people have no problem with.  What foods do you think should not be eaten or at least not often, but that other people eat all the time?

My two are juice and super processed snacks, like goldfish, but also all the really bad ones I am shocked people give their kids, like those fruit chews that are just corn syrup with vitamin C.

Re: What food do you think is horrible...

  • I can not handle any of the characer yogurt. It is just plain crap.
  • It has fruit in the title!!! It MUST be healthy!  (snort, kidding).

hmmmm....There are not many foods that I "ban" from my house...not that we eat every day either...but yes, my kids have had "fruit snacks" and juice and goldfish crackers.  I also have bought juice because it was on sale, I had a coupon so it was basically free...or juice boxes for zoo outings or in the car.

This. We are more of an Activia and Yoplait(for me) household.

Frozen pizza rolls & chocolate milk - the really thick kind with tons of chocolate. YUCK!

  • McDonald's chicken nuggets. My kids are no stranger to fast food, but I always get them a plain cheeseburger. At least it's beef- those nuggets have over 30 ingredients. The only place the kids get nuggets is if we're someplace like Chik-Fil-A where it's 100% real chicken.

And oh yeah, the "kid" yogurt stuff. Ds has them often at a friend's house and that doesn't really bother me too much, but I personally refuse to buy the crap and actually bring it into our house.

  • I'm not that rigid about food. I have enough food issues of my own to realize that food issues are about control. I really don't want DS to have to deal with this, if possible, so I let him eat some crap, while explaining why it's important to eat healthy food. So he eats chicken, veggies and fruit snacks, for example. The fruit snacks aren't great, but he likes them and he knows he can only pick one "treat" and he has to eat his healthy meal first. And he gets decent nutrition AND some control over his meal.
  • Anything with artificial sweetener. I think it is disgusting. Vile. It gives me the runs. Sugar should not give you intestinal problems, and it tastes so gross. DD never gets any artificial sweetener, I make a point of it.

Commercial burgers. I've read a few NYT articles lately and I can not order a burger unless I know it's 100% steak that's been ground to beef. The stuff they make burgers out of would make your skin crawl.  So DD gets chix nuggets, lol. We all have our thing.

Other than that, meh.  Oh, other than most frozen food that is processed to he!! and back. Lean Cuisines, etc. I used to eat them, but I can not stomach food that is so processed anymore. Hot pockets, etc, etc. Icky. We do have frozen food, but it's stuff w/out added crap and is actual food.

  • Depends on what you mean by "other people".... on here, or in the real world. I've never seen such food policing as I do on here. Big Smile

DS gets juice about once a week, but it's usually something like apple cider, or some other 100% juice. Goldfish, yes, but I buy the whole grain ones.

I can't believe some of the crap snacks I see at the playground. I totally agree on those Betty Crocker type fruit snacks. Also the totally processed stuff like chips, cookies and PopTarts.

One or two Oreos-- yeah, won't kill them. But when I see a kid snarf down half a dozen with a Hawaiian Punch, ew.

  • I honestly can't think of one thing. I do limit things like hot dogs and sausage in our house but we still eat it.

This, I can't think of anything I would outright ban. But this is our policy and our girls eat plenty of fruit, veggies, and lean meat. Oh, except Go-Gurt turns my stomach (though they eat Dora and Diego yoplait as a treat--something about the tube is just gross).
  • as far as character yogurt...my kids think that "gogurts" frozen in the freezer are ice cream push up pops and I feel like they are getting a slightly better "treat" than actual ice cream...maybe I"m kidding myself...but yes, I currently have character yogurt (gogurt) in my freezer....am I going to mommy hell????
  • A lot. Most of the snack food in any chain grocery store. I have to be really ontop of Owen because he is a major snacker and he is picky...so annoying. I honestly think that if I wasn't good about buying heathly snacks he would develop a weight problem. He would eat crap snacks all day if he could.

  • canned fruit in heavy syrup creeps me the hell out!
  • IMO, no food is horrible, just overall diets are horrible.

We don't buy juice, but DD has it other places.  She has never had chocolate milk, but occasionally I make chocolate malts for dessert.  Her favorite food of all time is blueberries, but she eats egos for breakfast.  I think it all balances out :)  She is healthy and happy.

  • I think it depends on your situation.  My son is allergic to fruit juice so on occasion I give him chocolate milk or Hi-C that contains no fruit juice.  I know people roll their eyes when they see me giving it to him (he is 4) but they can go blow.
  • Lunchables

Pop!!  I think that kids should never drink pop.  My nieces and nephews were raised on Dr. Pepper (in their sippy cups) and I think that's terrible.

Fruit roll-ups, fruit snacks, etc.  Real fruit always wins!

I think those pre-made PB&J sandwiches (Uncrustables?) are ridiculous.  Not sure about how nutrionally sound they are (or most likey, aren't) but MIL buys them for the other grandchildren all the time.  I just think that's lazy.

Oh, and MIL also buys applesauce with Pop-Rocks candy in it.   I was pretty horrified by that.  Needless to day, DD doesn't eat anything at her house.

  • artificial sweeteners.  I'm not sure how people can possibly think this is a good thing.  For anyone.

    And hot dogs.

  • Kool aid. Why would anyone, ever have that as a drink??? Other than that, its all about moderation. I try to avoid processed stuff as much as possible but I am not hugely anal about it.

  • Fruit snacks that have zero fruit in them. How hard it is to buy fruit leather instead?

Poptarts and heavily-sugared cereal for breakfast. (okay as a treat only).

Nutrigrain bars. There's like zero fruit in those things but people think they are healthy.

Funnily enough, I have no problem with juice or goldfish crackers :-)

ETA: Most of my problems are with food that's junk but tries to look healthy. I have no problem with occasional junk. But call it what it is. Unintelligent/uninformed people see the strawberry poptart ad and think it's a great breakfast for their kid.

  • Chef Boyardee.

My MIL bought the kids a can of ravioli and spaghettios because she thought they would eat it.

    YUCK.. dog food.

  • The only thing I wouldn't give my kids is artificial sweetners.  They don't like and can't eat most things, so I think that balances out the few treats they do get.  I really think it's all about balance and moderation.

I agree.  All this food talk is really annoying, to be honest.  Can we just get a little perspective?  An occassional treat, or even regular treats, are not only ok, but perfectly healtrhy.  We are teaching our kids healthy eating habits that they will have with them the rest of their life.  It is ok to indulge once in while and letting them indulge as kids teaches them a healthy way to indulge as adults.  There are so many things parents on here try to obsessively control-food, sleep, learning, etc that its makes my head spin and I feel so out of place here sometimes.

OK, rant over.  To answer your question, I don't like chewy fruit snacks, but DS can have them occassionally, but I really limit them.

No not at all, it is just that at least you know they are not healthy. I can't stand when parents give their kids the crap yogurt and say well it is healthy they are eating yogurt. I give DD both chips and goldfish, but don't even pretend they are healthy.

  • Hot dogs
    McDonalds
    Artificial Sweeteners

  • I guess I would have to say candy.

    same here.

  • I make as much of our food as possible and refuse to buy anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. You'd be amazed at how much that rules out.
  • Wow.

The only thing I don't really like is pop and sugar cereal-I don't think they are awful tho. My kids do eat yogurt with characters on them, and they love the wholegrain goldfish! They get one sweet treat a day..I have cousins on the other hand who are never allowed anything and if they come over you better hide the candy bowl-they FILL their pockets!
