how much does a delivery cost?

We just moved cities and shifted to a 80% coverage from a 100%. Meaning we will have to pay 20% of all hospital costs. We are new to the city and I haven't talked to the doctors yet.We are in the chicago area.

Could anyone give me a ballpark figure as to what child birth costs are?

Thanks in advance

Re: how much does a delivery cost?

  • It varies widely based on where you are (and of course whether you have a vaginal or cesarean delivery).

Does your insurance have a website? I know that mine has some tools that can be used to estimate costs.

eta: Oh, and I meant to add - maybe you could check your local board and see what they say. They'd probably have a better idea of the costs in your area.

This was my thought as well.

I had a vaginal delivery, 2 night stay at the hospital, and DS was in the NICU for 4 hours.  I believe the cost was around $20k, maybe slightly more.  We paid about $1200 of that.

I had a c/s with a 4 day hospital stay, plus extra labs and meds due to complications. My delivery was also 20k, so you can see how location makes a big difference!

Don't forget that your child will have a bill too - DS's was 50k, but that includes NICU time. You'll also likely get a separate bill from your OB (they should talk to you about that ahead of time), and I think some people get billed separately for anesthesia too?

  • I had a vaginal birth, 2 days in the hospital. After insurance we paid somewhere around $4k in seperate bills (for me and for ds combined).
  • I live outside Philadelphia, had a med-free birth (no anesesiologist (sp?) with no complications, and my hosptial bill was ~ $20K.

  • I went into labor, got fully dilated and pushed for about half an hour before they decided I needed a c-section. I then had a 5 day hospital stay (I had a fever). The bill for me was $15,000 before insurance. I paid about $400 of that out of my own pocket. (after the hospital helped)

DS was in the NICU for 6 days, and had tons of xrays and labs done, and his bill was about $24,000. We paid about $600 after insurance paid their part, and the hospital's help.

These numbers are so low because there is a program at the hospital I worked at/delivered DS at that helps a little bit of your bill. They paid 80% of what was left over after insurance.

  • My OB+hospital + DS's part was about $22K

normal vag delivery w/epi, no NICU for DS, 3 nights for DS and 2 nights for me +1 w/ no care.

  • Total for everything (hospital, ob, epi, nursery) my insurance was billed about 30K. I I was responsible for 30% of that but my out of pocket max for the year was 5k, so that is what it cost me total to have DS. Check and see what your OOP max is.

  • thanks, out of pocket is $3000. thats still a lot! thanks for your help.
