Baby Names

Older names...

So, I have a friend that had a little girl in 08 and she's pregnant again with another girl. Their daughters will be Delilah and Ophelia. They wanted to make sure nobody had those names and they weren't in the top 100 names! I think they succeeded. WDYT? They're cute, but not for me.

Re: Older names...

  • My niece is Delilah. I didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me. I can't imagine another name for her now. Sometimes we call her just D or Lilah. I do think it's grown in popularity since that Plain White T's song came out.

I don't like Ophelia as much, but your friend wanted uncommon names, she succeeded.

  • I adore older, old-fashioned names.  My daughter is named Clara :)  We tend to like names like Charlotte, Abigail, Elizabeth, Rose, etc.  Our boy name (if we ever have a boy) is William.

I love Ophelia, but DH didn't like it.  Delilah is cute but I don't like it that much.

  • Delilah is OK; Ophelia I don't really like but I have heard worse. If they end up calling her Lila she very well may not be the only one. I'm pretty sure that is in the top 100; certainly it will be soon, when you combine the spellings.
  • I like a lot of older names, too.  I wouldn't name my child Delilah because of the associations with that name.  Ophelia is nice, though.
  • Delilah is okay, but I wouldn't use it because of the negative connotations from the Bible story. I really like Ophelia, but I'm a soon-to-be-English teacher, so I am all about literary names:)

  • I think they're both okay. I'd take Delilah and Ophelia over Madison and Ava ANY day. ?DS's name could be considered "older" and the name we chose for #2 is definitely in that category.

  • I have friends who named their daughters (now 10 and 7 yo) Delilah and Tallulah. I like the name Delilah, I thought the "Hey There Delilah" song would probably make it more popular?

Our cats middle names are both Ophelia...used only when we yell at them :) So to me it is sort of a joke name, but I think it is a good name.

  • I like older names but not those two. Delilah is too negative from the Bible.
  • I like Lilah...Ophelia is NMS

  • I like them although I'd never use them. Plus, Ophelia sounds like "O-feel-ya" so that would probably make me think twice about it.

  • Im not fond of either, but that doesn't make them bad.
  • I think Ophelia is definitely less common than Delilah. I love the name Ophelia but think that any little girl with this name today is going to have to deal with a bit of tormenting later on in life.
