2nd Trimester

Namesakes?

So (if its a boy), we are thinking of naming the baby after DH. He is named after his grandfather and the name goes several generations back. DH has been second guessing this b/c he thinks it may be strange to have two people named the same thing in one house. I have also heard when the baby grows up it can cause alot of confusion for people that don't know there are 2 of this name. I really like his name regardless, but I just wanted some opinions. Anyone else have experience here or planning on having a namesake?

I know this is early to worry about this :) Because of this it will probably be a girl, ha. (which is fine)

TIA!!!

Re: Namesakes?

  • My son is named after his father. We call him Christopher or Xopher and his Dad goes by Chris. It hasn't caused any issues so far. HTH!

  • My DS is named after DH but we go by his middle name which is what we always planned to call him but his official first name is DH's name. You could always do that!
  • We have relatives "Little Rocco" and "Big Rocco" ... what's funny is Little Rocco outgrew his dad so now he's the big one but still goes by Little.  No confusion for them and they like the bond.
  • 2 situations: My G-pa and Uncle have the same name, Donald Jerome. My G-pa went by Donald or Don and my uncle goes by Jerry. I know when my uncle got older they had to ask, older or younger. My DH is named after his G-pa, Richard and his Uncle also has the same name. G-pa goes by ***, Uncle goes by Richie and DH (to his family only, he can't stand the nickname) goes by Joey, his middle name. He might be a little tough having 2 of the same name but I am sure it will work out.
  • I meant "It might" not "he"
  • If we have a girl they will have the middle name Ann. It is my middle name, my mom's, my grandma's, and my great-grandma's.

If we have a boy their middle name will be Joseph. It is DH's middle name and a family name on his side as well. If we do happen to have another boy along the way their middle name will be William after my dad.

  • In DH's family, there's a family name that has spread through seven generations. There are currently three members of the family alive whose first name is all James. The oldest goes by Jay, the middle Jamie, and the youngest James. It's honestly not that confusing at all and (especially the youngest) they like the bond it has created between grandfather, father, and son Smile
  • I want to do the same and middle name after grandfather. We will probably do a nickname so we don't have 2 people going by the same name! Wink

  • We have two jims in my family and we call them either "big jim" and "little jim" or more often "jim" and "jim b" (because his middle name is bradley)

  • I know this isnt exactly the same but I plan to name our boy John Aaron. My grandfather, father, and brother are all named John. My dad goes by Thurman (middle name), my grandfather (deceased) went by Jake (nickname for John), and my brother goes by his middle name Chance.

Our baby will go by Jake in honor of my grandfather.

  • If we have a boy, we're definitely naming him after family.  DH, his dad, and his grandfather all have the same first name (they went by first name, "Bubba," and middle name, so no confusion).  Also, my dad and grandfather have the same first name as DH, but they both go by nicknames.  By naming our son the same, we'll be honoring both our families!
