Baby Names

Help me make Walter cool:)

Here is a challenge for all you creative ladies....make the name Walter cool.

Could be a first name or a middle name, last name will be Smith.

I think I would prefer it be the middle name because I just can't quite imagine calling my kid Walt, but it is my fathers name and for various reasons I would like to try to honor him.

Now if I end up having a girl I don't know what I will do, but I would like to have the boy thing nailed just in case;)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Help me make Walter cool:)

  • My first thought was William Walter Smith. But you probably shouldn't name your kid Will Smith. I am also struggling with this because it was my grandpa's name.

    Wesley Walter

    Owen Walter

    hmmm.... I'm no help.

  • Because Walter is a classic gentleman's name, I wouldn't try to use a "too trendy" first name. I'd use a classic, but not uncommon first name.

    Thomas Walter

    Andrew Walter

    Matthew Walter

    Owen Walter

I think you get the idea. Good Luck! Smile

  • I actually think Walt is pretty sweet!

  • I really like it as a first name. It's old school classic.

  • I know two doctors who's boys are named Walter (first name).  One's son is about 9-10 now and the other one is only 2 1/2.  The first one has always been "Walter" and the second one (baby) they call him "Wally".
  • I really love the name Walter! (My last name is Smith, too, BTW)

My thoughts, go with something classic, but not stuffy. Something trendy (Braden, Carter, Logan) will clash. Something quirky (Spencer, Dexter, Oscar) will make Walter seem even quirkier.

You have a bit of latitude with this one. (I'd go with three or less syllables.) Personally, I think something like Anthony, Henry, Andrew, Charles, Ian, James, David, Isaac, Thomas, Zachary, Adam... works.

  • I know a Timothy Walter. Walter is his father's name. I would use it for a middle name.
  • My grandpa is Walter Jack.  He goes by Jack.
  • I know a few guys named Walt/Walter so I don't think it's that unusual, I wouldn't be totally against it for a first name. But I can see why you'd prefer to have it as a middle :-)

    Yup, both work wonderfully.

  • My son is Bryce Walter W. Walter was my dad's middle name and since he passed away, I knew I was going to use it no matter what.  I really wanted to name him Weston Walter W, but my DH wouldn't go for it. I like the Owen Walter suggestion.

  • Walter is actually at the top of DH's boy name list. I love the name too but it's my uncle's name and I feel weird naming my kid after an uncle who I'm not particularly close with. We always called him Wally but I think professionally he goes by Walter.

    His name: Walter Paul

  • Sounds great. Also, I was thinking about your earlier post that you wouldn't know what to do if it was a girl. You can also name her using the initials of your loved one that you are trying to honor. We've been tossing around the idea of honoring my grandma by using his initials....he hated his name as a child and adult so forbid anyone to actually name their children after him. His initials were CE and many people called him by this so it could work.

Or Patsy for a girl... Big Smile

    Just a thought for ya.

  • I love love love Walter!  It is one of my favorite names.
  • Thanks so much for all the replies!  I feel much better about using it now:)

Now, off to make that baby!  ;)
