Baby Names

Names too close?

I recently came across the name "McKenna" that I really like.  However, my cousin's daughter is named Mackenzie.  Do you think these names are too close?  We are keeping our names a surprise until LO is born, so I thought I'd ask you guys for advice.

We are pretty close with them.  But not close enough where we see them every week or anything. Maybe once every couple of months.

Re: Names too close?

  • I think it is very similiar. I don't know that you can't use it though.

  • i dont think it should be a problem... my friend just had a baby and named her Makenna Rose... think its such a cute name, people tried nicknaming her kenny but the mom refused that nickname.... i like the spelling Makenna rather that McKenna, not a fan of the 2 capital letters.... good luck!!!

  • If it were me, I wouldn't do it because they seem to close. Depends on how much you love the name.
  • They are very similar and very easy for other people to mix up.

  • Use it, I love the name H vetoed it. ?I don't think you are close enough to them for it to matter, I wouldn't name my kid that if say our niece was named Mackenzie but cousin's daughter it is all good.
  • too close for siblings, but fine for a cousin you see every couple of months

We are in this position also.  For 10 years we have loved the name Kaya & knew we'd name our firstborn girl this (if we had a girl).  Well my SIL had a girl & named her Maya.  We think Kaya is too close now :(  We see them once every month or so, too.  There are so many names out there that it's not the end of the world to me, just a bit of a bummer.

  • It is similar but i dont think it needs to stop you from naming your daughter that.

  • We had the same issue, my niece is Mackenzie and we liked Makenna, we decided it was too close to use. It think it's a little different since it's your cousin but if you see each other that often I wouldn't use it.
  • Wow that name is gaining popularity, I already know (2) McKenna's.

    I don't think it's too close - I'd use it!

  • I think it is more about how many people you have in connection to both families.  You may not see them much but does your parents or grandparents?  I would run the name by my mom and see if the other girl pops into her head right away.  If you say you picked McKenna and she says "oh I like it , it reminds of Mackenzie so and so's daughter."  Then no I wouldn't use it.
  • I think they are different enough.  Go for it!
