Re-using old breast pumps. Anyone do it?

I have a Medela that I bought while pregnant with P. I used it the entire first year and then put it in storage. Would it be okay to use with this new baby (even though it would have been over 3 years since last purchased)? Would I have to buy all new parts?

Did anyone else re-use your old breast pump for baby #2, #3, etc.?

  • Yes.  I am currently using the same Medela that I used for a year while nursing my son.  I didn't even buy any new parts.  I was planning to, but a friend who is a lactation consultant told me it really wasn't necessary.  i just steralized all the parts and started pumping.  I've been using it 7 or 8 months now with no problems.

  • I think it varies by person. I plan to buy new tubes (because they are just old and would like new) but that is it. I have a ameda purely yours. It's a closed system so no milk could have ever gotten in the pump. I think others just sterilize and reuse.

  • I would use it if it seems to be working ok.  I bought mine in Nov. 2006, used it for 6 months with DS1, and then started using it again from Sept 2008-Aug 2009 on and off.  I just changed the membranes before I used it again.

  • Yes, for my DD, I actually used my sister's PIS for 6 months or so.  She had used it for 2 kids by then and after I used it, she used it a little for her third baby.  I bought a PIS when my DD was 6 months and used it for 6 months and am using it now for DS.  I didn't buy any new parts; just sterilized everything.

  • I'm getting ready to use mine again after several years.  I did buy new tubing, membranes, etc., but that was my choice.  I also took it to our local bf'ing store and they were able to test the suction for me.
  • I am going to reuse my Ameda; no intent to buy new parts but there were some I couldn't find and bought new ones...

  • I used a used Medela PIS I got from my old boss for DD, she is 3.5.  I also use it occasionally for DS 7 mo.  My SIL used it to pump for my nephew in between.  We just bought the sanitizing bags to clean the tubing.  It was stored for a year between the time I used it and she used and same with my DS, so I wasn't worried about anything "in the pump", since virtually nothing harmful lives for more than a year without food and we are all healthy people.
  • Yep--used it for a year with both girls.  I sterilized everything I could and used it.

(I even borrowed a pump from my friend that she had used for her two kids...my own parts, obviously, so basically her motor)

  • I reused my old breastpump. It never occurred to me not to. I got all new parts for about $50 because mine were really worn out, but I was not spending another $250 on a new pump.

  • If it works, why not?
