Babies: 9 - 12 Months

So how do you wean a solely bf, almost 12 month old?

Any advice would be great...How long does this process take?  Does it have to be cow's milk, is that the best thing?  Something doesn't seem right about giving him so much dairy all of a sudden... I just want to give him the healthiest thing. We are thinking about starting to try for another baby soon and I still haven't gotten a period so that's why I'm starting the weaning process.

  • They aren't supposed to get whole milk until one year.  I think if you wean before then you switch to formula and then at a year you can switch to whole milk.  You might be able to give some whole milk now  - I'd suggest talking to your pedi.

  • Usually if you cut out the overnight feeding your progesterone level will drop enough for your period to restart. id try that first. Or just nurse upopn awakening before nap and at bedtime use whole milk in between once hes a year old
  • I have absolutely no idea, but I am in almost your exact same situation.  And DD has always refused to drink out of a bottle, and isn't much more fond of a sippy cup.  She'll drink out of a regular cup, but we always have to hold it for her.  I am hoping she'll pick up the cup soon enough.

  • Exactly! He can't hold and drink at the same time, with a sippy cup either!  One trick my husband showed me was to left his elbows so that he is drinking, instead of lifting the actually cup for him...so that way he learns how to do it himself and the past few days he's really starting to get it...why is this all so complicated! :)
  • Try straw cups. No lifting needed!
