Is $425 too much to spend?

I have been looking for quite awhile at baby cribs. Casually before we started TTC, and then seriously once we got the BFP. I generally veto every crib I see as either too dark, too light, too modern, too something. Anyway, i FINALLY found two cribs that I love. Seriously love. I would get the crib/changing table-dresser combo bc I'm all about spending as little as possible now and having it last as long as possible. To me, $425 doesn't seem that bad for a grow-with-me crib and a changing table that will become the dresser after they grow up a bit.

Is this too much to spend though? If I can get it cheaper, I'm all about that (yes, I've checked craigslist but I live in a small community so not much unless I'm willing to drive 3+hrs and no garage sales until summer which will be too late). I'm not sure on the price still. Here are the two cribs:

Re: Is $425 too much to spend?

  • My crib cost double that. I wanted something high in quality since it is a convertible and will last 18 years. So IMO no it is not too much to spend. If you can afford it, why not get something you like?
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I do not think $425 is that much. I would check Baby Bargains to see what the safety ratings are on it though (jmo). GL!

  • What is baby bargains?

I know the basics of what we need, and I know all about care from nannying earlier in life, but I'm definitely still learning about what brands are better and things like that if that makes sense.

    :-)

  • Baby bargains is a great book that you may want to invest in.  It gives you ratings on pretty much all different types of  baby gear.  I don't think that this is a bad price for the 2 pieces.  One of the cribs is very similar to the one that I got  (the baby mod cadence from walmart...it's the same crib as the davinci kalani just cheaper).  I paid 225 for the crib and just check the price of the changing table and its 250.

Go for it if that is what you like!

  • I think that's a fine amount to spend. We spent 1200 on a convertible crib, dresser, and all the pieces to convert into toddler and full bed.  It was free shipping too.  I think you found a great deal!

  • I don't think it is too much to spend. I like the first set better.

  • It really depends.  My son scraped his teeth down the backside of his $300 crib. The back was to convert to being a queen side headboard so it looked like a sleigh bed.  After a year it had to be tossed out and we got a $150 from Walmart.  But my girl never does any damage to her crib.  So you may get your money worth and you may not.
  • mine was double that;  I totally second the Baby Bargains book--helped us out immensely

  • In my opinion, it's not too much too spend at all, I spent approx $700 on a solid wood convertible crib, but I plan on using it for 18 years, so I think I'll get my money's worth. As long as its a quality crib its worth the money.

  • We spent way more on DS#1's Munire crib and dresser.  We bought what we liked and had every intention of it being something to grow with him.  That said we are buying him a new twin bed and new dresser and keeping the Munire set for DS#2.  It was either that or convert it to the full size bed but that would take up all the floor space in his room.

Also, DS was trying to throw a heavy toy into his crib and it chunked a nice piece of wood out of the top rail and it also has bite marks all over it from when he was teething.  The bite marks aren't noticeable unless you look for them and my Dad said he could fix the part where the chunk is missing to make it less noticeable.

My plan is to move in the next few years so by the time DS#2 is out of the crib we hope DS#1 will have a bigger room and can then convert the crib to a full size bed and give ds#2 the twin until he gets bigger.  The dresser has held up really well so hopefully one of the boys will be using that for several years to come.

We spend so much because it was the only thing we really liked so we didn't mind spending the money.  It just sucks that DS#1 has really given the crib a beating!

  • I spent $900 on my crib & dresser... so I don't think it's too much!  Especially since it will transform into other beds LO will need.
  • IMO, that's a question only you and your DH can decide.  DS' crib was around $550 I think.  The crib I got for the twins was $170 each.  We decided not to spend so much on theirs since they're sharing a room, we won't have space for 2 full beds in there, so a high quality convertible wasn't a concern for us.
