Baby Names

Too many names for one kid?

We're TTC #2 and we can't agree on a girls' name.  Obviously, we have a lot of time to decide, but we love to talk names :)  DH wants Catherine Elizabeth.  I want Abigail Elizabeth.  We both like Elizabeth as a first name, so I think we would probably go with that as a compromise. Abigail is for my mom, so I want that to stay, but DH has always wanted to use Catherine.  So is some combination of Elizabeth/Abigail/Catherine too many names for one kid?  How would you order them to make them flow?

Elizabeth Catherine Abigail?

Elizabeth Abigail Catherine?

Our last name is really common, if that helps.

Re: Too many names for one kid?

  • I'm really not a fan of 3 middle names, and I do think those names all together would be a mouthful.

What if you got rid of Elizabeth altogether (unless that has family significance too) and used Abigail Catherine or Catherine Abigail so that you could use the names you both really wanted?

This. I think they sound beautiful either way.

  • Thanks, ladies :)  I think we're both being stubborn, because we both want the name we like best AND Elizabeth.  Oh well :)

  • 2 of my sister's kids have 2 mn's because our great grandparents passed away right before that DC was born.  I like Elizabeth Abigail best.
  • 2 mn for a boy is not that bad, but 2 mn for a girl? Hopefully one day your little girl will get married and will then have 5 names to choose from. I personally like the idea of getting rid of Elizabeth and using Catherine and Abigail. Or I'd keep Elizabeth (since you both like it) and dump Catherine, since Abigail has significance. JMO.

  • All three of those names are my favorite girl names so I'm no help!
  • I like 2mn's, but only if one of them is shorter- I agree with pp that all of these would be a mouthful. That being said, it would still be a beautiful mouthful because I like all your names:)

  • you only need a first name and a middle name.  no need to add more to it.  maybe you guys will have to compromise and use another name for your next child!

We're only planning on having two children, so it feels like "now or never" for the names we love.  Who knows, though?  We could end up with twins, or get pregnant again down the road...but I see what you mean.  :)

  • I say go with the one you love the most (Elizabeth) as the first name.  Most people won't ever even know that she has two middle names.  Since all three names are long, you'll have to consider which one will go first since it will likely be the only one that shows up on documents for her - the full four names First, Middle, Middle, Last won't likely fit.  I only had one middle name but all three happened to be about 8 letters each so my name has always been close to or slightly cut off on things like standardized testing, filling out applications, etc.  Just something to consider ;-)

I think Catherine Elizabeth Abagail flows, but if you want Elizabeth first then go with Elizabeth Catherine Abagail.

  • I think Elizabeth Catherine Abigail flows better. I love all those names, though!

    Blank!
  • I'm not a fan of 2 middle names.  I think it's tough for a kid.   But, you picked out great names and really, I don't think you can go wrong either way.
  • I think Abigail Catherine Elizabeth sounds best

  • I don't have a problem with two middle names, but this is a handful.  Just keep in mind that most likely, at some point, she's going to drop one of the names or just go by initials to shorten it.
  • Definitely too many names, especially because they're all long names.  I think you really need to narrow it down to two!  However, all 3 are nice names.

  • My stepsons have four middle names.  Yep, six names total, each!  The only time all these names come up is when they say their whole name to people, usually who they have just met.  On paperwork and such they go by first name, first middle name, last name.  This baby most likely won't have that many names, but there's nothing wrong with having more names than most people.  Do what you feel is right, without worrying about what everyone else thinks.  The choice is yours and your husbands.
