I have ALWA YS been the person to see things on tv and do it at my house on my own but there just arent too many ideas for nurseries on HGTV (not that I even have time to sit down and watch it these days! lol) For example, I spent only 300 bucks re-doing my bedroom. That included (new queen sized mattress, homemade headboard, re-finished a garage sale dresser, bought all new queens sized bedding (including comforter, sheets, pillowcases and body pillow case), made chocolate curtains, and and 2 gallons of paint so I could take the walls from K-state purple to tan with white trim to match rest of the house.
So why shouldnt I be able to do this with a nusery?! If you have any ideas for cutting corners, please let me know- I am interested to see some ideas and maybe pictures of things you made or recycled on your own to save money. Did you use a dresser isntead of a changing table? buy your crib used or paint and older one? Sew your own boppy pillow or make your own bedding? If so, good for you-Yay for budget mommies- and I would LOVE to see some ideas and crafty-work!!!
Re: DIY project ideas?
I bought the wall stickers that matched my bedding, cut them out, put them on paper, and framed them. I spent about $45 for three 11 x 14 pictures (frames were 40% off at Micheal's!).
That is my only DIY project so far...although I have more to do!
Pic of all three:
Closeup of one:
For LO's room we bought a desk and rocker from Goodwill and repainted the desk which we are using as his changing table. His dresser was my dad's when he was little so we just repainted that. My mom can sew so she bought pillows and fabric from the craft store and made pillow covers and his curtains.
I love his room and couldn't really imagine dishing out a ton of money on it when I know it'll have to be redone when he's a little older. I'll hopefully be able to put some pics of his room up soon!
We made these for LO's wall out of a couple of inexpensive platters from goodwill and some chalkboard paint:
I've made curtains and a diaper stacker so far...
I'm in the process of making a seat cushion for the rocking chair, along with armrest organizers (padded thingys that go on the arms of the chair with organizing pockets that hang down the sides for nursing pads, cream, burpies, etc.).
You can see the diaper stacker a bit better here:
These are the fabrics we used:
Used for curtains, and maybe incorporated into the armrest organizer.
This is what is on top of the stacker, and is what the cushion will be.
I've done quite a bit on a smallish budget. My mom is buying our crib for us (we've picked out the Graco Lauren, so it's still budget friendly). We're planning on painting my DH's solid pine dresser from when he was a kid to match the crib and using that as a changing table. We bought the bedding (Bananafish Love Bird), but instead of buying the paintings that go with it, I painted them myself
I had my FIL ( woodworker) build me some decorative birdhouses from scratch wood. I then painted them.
He's also making me letters that will go above the crib that I will do a special treatment on, but that's kind of a surprise (since, well, I haven't seen it down a lot and I have to see if it works first)
I also handmade closet dividers
So I've done this pretty much with nothing but scrapbook paper, paint, and a few canvases.
We bought a dresser to use as a changing table off of Craigslist and painted it white ($50 including painting supplies). I also made a flag banner to hang over the crib ($15).
I made closet dividers similar to on in a PP, I also mod podged some blocks with scrapbooking paper, I think I might put his name on them when he gets here, but they are complete enough right now with just paper on them. I also customized a clock I got for cheap at Kohls, I took it apart and put scrapbooking paper to match, framed a picture my cousin drew for the baby, painted a bible verse on three canvases, painted a set of hooks I got at Hob Lob......basically lots of painting
