2nd Trimester

Anyone w asthma on xopenex or albuterol?

I've been sick, so there's backstory, but my dr just switched me from albuterol in the nebulizer to xopenex, because he said it was safer.  But I looked it up and they're both category C.

So I was just wondering if anyone got switched from albuterol to xopenex, or if your dr kept you on albuterol.  Or if you've always been on xopenex.

I'm also not sure the xopenex works as well as the albuterol does...  And of course now it's the weekend so drs not in!  I just got switched on Friday afternoon.  Any feedback on either drug or your drs orders for which to take would be appreciated.  Thanks!!!

  • I take albuterol 2 times a day and have through all my pregnancies. I have never had an issue.

  • I've taken albuterol with both pregnancies.  No problems.
  • I am still on albuteral as my inhaler and nebulizer.  My doctor said it was fine as long as I keep track of how much I am using it.  They did take me off of three of my prevention meds and put me on a "safer" one. It doesn't prevent as well.
  • I have albuterol in the inhaler, xopenex in the nebulizer. Both work fine for me.

  • I was under the impression that albuterol was safe during pregnancy...I take it daily.  I also take Singular daily.

  • I take albuterol, and my doctor took me off of my preventative meds (advair) when I got pregnant.  He has no problem with the albuterol, even though it is class C.  My asthma isn't the same being off of the advair, but the albuterol does its job.
  • My doc. kept me on albuterol - she said in a perfect world, no, it's not the best to take during pregnancy, but that the lack of oxygen to the baby during an asthma attack is much worse for the baby than the potential affects of the medication.

However she took me off of Advair (category C preventative) and put me on a category B preventative instead.  Her opinion was that taking a category B preventative on a regular basis would be better than having a ton of asthma attacks and having to take more albuterol because it's category C.

Category B - studies in animals have not shown adverse effects when taken during pregnancy, but studies in humans have not yet occurred.

Category C - studies in animals have shown adverse effects when taken during pregnancy

  • I am on albuterol. I only have to take it once in a while, but I figure it's a lot worse not being able to breathe than to take some meds every once in a while.

  • i've been on xopenex for a while and was on it for my last pg. . for me xopenex always worked better then albuterol . . but i would probably just got with what my doctor put me one and confirm with the ob.
