My DH adores the name Ashley...for a boy. I know that it was a boys name back in the day, and I know that it is still used as such in the UK, but is it just too far gone to be saved? Do you think it can be rescued and used again for a boy, or should I follow my instincts and totally nix this idea in fear that he will be beat up at recess?

I wouldn't say it was a big boys name in the UK. I would say it isn't good for boy.

Its still used sometimes in the US... like that guy that was on DWTS... Ashley Hamilton...

Nix it... or compromise, maybe something like Ashton?  You don't want the kid getting roughed up on the playground.

I know of a few older guys named Ashley.  But I wouldn't do that to my son.

What about Ashton? Or Asher?

Don't do it to your son. Can you convince DH of Asher or Ashton? That's a fair compromise IMO.

Oh, please please don't name your LO Ashley (for a boy)....I definitely think that is too far gone..unless you live in a rural town and you own a pig farm. With that being said-that is the only Ashley I know that is a guy...he lives in a town of maybe 200 people, and owns a pig farm. LOL. Definitely compromise and do Asher or Ashton...just not Ashley.

Ashley is not just a boy's name that's become a girl's name. It's also one of the most popular girl's names of the last 30 years. So, yes. It's way too far gone. It has been more popular for girls than it ever was for boys.

I would nix it. It's just not a common name for a boy and he'd probably get picked on in school...

Ditto the pp about it being super popular as a girls' name.  Also, it makes me think of Gone With the Wind.

Don't do it.  There are some great boys names that begin with "Ash" like Asher or Ashton.

My brother-in-law is Ashley. Growing up, I guess he used his middle name instead of his real name when he met strangers (like at camp or something). Now he goes by Ash, and sometimes lies and says it's short for Ashton. It's unique but it definitely can get a funny look.   Oh, and his college originally set him up in a female dorm
