Clomid w/ and w/o Trigger Shots

I have been trying to do some research on Clomid -- since I start tomorrow.

I have read about some people using Clomid without trigger shots...why would a doctor prescribe clomid and a TS for one person but only Clomid for another person?

Re: Clomid w/ and w/o Trigger Shots

  • I've often wondered this myself.

  • I only got prescribed the clomid! You got me wondering now!
  • I was prescribed Clomid only.  Typically, this is done by an OB/GYN, not an RE, to see if they can just induce ovulation naturally.  The trigger shot actually makes the eggs release, if I understand correctly.  I don't think standard OB/GYN's can give trigger shots.
  • Looks to me like the trigger shot just gives the doctor more control over exactly when you ovulate..why wouldn't everyone want this??
  • Um... Maybe they're thinking you're going to be a tough cookie the crack, if you know what I mean--since the provera didn't work on the first try and all.

This, but I have an RE maybe she is just trying to see how it goes, 'cause I have a follow up in 8 weeks!

  • I can't speak for all but here is what my RE explained to me.

Basically, they view clomid as a very serious drug and don't want to use it more than 3 cycles. The trigger shot is the only way to really maximize those cycles because it helps you pinpoint the timing exactly (whether you are doing an IUI or TI). It also ensures that you DO ovulate.

Also, I "think" that the shot helps the follies mature.

There are no side effects to the shot and it takes the guess work out of things.

Oh yea...I mean I'm totally not complaining...just curious!

  • If you are doing TI and not IUI the trigger isn't always necessary since they don't have to get the timing window so close.  I also think in cases where one doesn't O at all on their own, they aren't necessarily worried about later ovulation being the problem so they let you O on your time rather than triggering it.  In cases like me, where I O on my own but late, they give that trigger to get that little bit of extra edge on earlier O (that and I think my RE uses the same protocol even if you aren't doing IUI)

That is my unofficial opinion anyway.

This. I guess the trigger shot guarantees ovulation as opposed to just Clomid where it doesn't necessarily guarantee it.
  • Sail and L&R - does this make sense to you then?

My RE did not mention a trigger for me.  I am to call in the morning of my +OPK and go in for u/s that day.  We will do IUI the next day.  Since I don't have a problem ovulating on my own, I'm thinking this might be the reason why - no need to essentially force the eggs out.  And also, since I will have had a +OPK, they are confident I'll ovulate on my own within the next 2 days?

  • For me I ovulate on my own and usually CD CD13-15 so for this first round of Clomid they didn't send me to an RE for a trigger. My OB/GYN wanted to see if I needed a little help with a stronger ovulation and just tried Clomid.  If this doesn't work I see an RE on the 23rd and will evaluate next steps.

This is what my RE explained to me. The 2 times I was prescribed Clomid, one with TI and the other one with IUI, I was supposed to get a TS to pinpoint the exact time of ovulation.

  • I have been on clomid without a trigger.  I have been ovulating on it, so my doctor hasn't thought the trigger necessary yet.  Good luck!
