Not another H1N1 Question!

Sorry, but I have one. I have been looking online briefly, but haven't really found anything. Does anyone know how effective the first round of the H1N1 vaccine is for LO?

DD has only had her first round, but I am pretty sure I have come down with the flu. At least I have flu like symptoms. We have all had our seasonal flu shots. DH and I have to wait for our H1N1 vaccine because Alberta is only giving to high risk groups right now.

  • Not sure of the percentage, but something is better than nothing. Your LO will have developed SOME antibodies against H1N1.  SK is doing high risk groups and mom's with LO's under 6 mos also.  I lucked out and got mine yesterday though.

There's also a nasty stomach bug going around here that was a lot of fun for both DS and I last week.

  • Only about 35% of kids have a robust immune response to the first dose of vaccine. So yes, it's entirely possible that your LO will get flu. She will hopefully have an attenuated course of disease if she does get sick. Wear a mask if you're coughing. And make sure to wash hands after using a tissue. I hope you feel better!

  • Health Canada announced yesterday that children under 2 or 3 (can't remember which) need the second shot.  DD has H1N1 right now and got the vaccine on Nov. 3 (diagnosed on Nov. 10).  ER Pedi said that she would have some antibodies from the vaccine and her illness wouldn't be as bad.  I doubt we will go back for the second shot now that she has had the flu.

ETA: DD was REALLY sick on Tuesday (fever was 39.6).  She was prescribed Tamiflu and appears to be getting better.  I guess we will never know how sick she would have been without the shot and how less sick she would have with the booster, but she is recovering remarkably fast, IMO.

Kids are troopers. Sorry to hear your LO is sick. I'm glad she's making a speedy recovery.

Thanks for posting  about Health Canada's announcement. I thought I was losing it b/c last week DS got his H1N1 shot and I was told that he'd only need the 1 shot.  Then yesterday we went to get his seasonal shot, and they were telling me that we have to return for a 2nd dose of H1N1 and the seasonal flu shot in about a month.
